SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Gertrude "Cookie" Wright of Chicago, who
4 passed away on June 8, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Gertrude "Cookie" Wright was born March 21, 1942
6 in Woodstock, Tennessee to the late Jack and Susie Rodgers; she
7 was baptized at an early age at the Campbell Chapel AME Church
8 of Woodstock where she sang in the choir with many of her
9 immediate family members; she graduated from Woodstock High
10 School where she was also crowned Miss Woodstock High School
11 during her senior year; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Gertrude Wright later moved to Chicago, where she
13 graduated from Olive Harvey College Nursing School with a
14 Registered Nursing degree; she worked as a nurse at the Hyde
15 Park Hospital of Chicago; she also provided private duty
16 nursing for seniors; she later joined the Sure-Way Missionary
17 Baptist Church of Chicago where she served faithfully within
18 the women's ministry; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Gertrude Wright was the first person in her
20 immediate family to be elected to public office; she was
21 elected to two four-year terms as a member of the local school
22 council in Chicago and was instrumental in the election

1 victories of the late Mayor of Chicago Harold Washington and
2 current Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr.; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Gertrude Wright was preceded in death by her
4 parents and her loving sister, Bobbie Jean Carpenter; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Gertrude H. Wright is survived by her husband,
6 Malvin Wright; her sons, Sean Tere (Kathy) Howard and Otheius
7 B. Wright; her sisters, Charlie (Mack) Reed, LaVerne (Ezell)
8 Williams, Cecil (Alonzo) Mitchell, Bishop Bettye (Neasbie)
9 Alston, and Shirley R. Hill; her brothers, Jackie Ray (Nellie)
10 Rodgers and Jessie L. Rodgers; and her eight grandchildren;
11 therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
13 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
14 her family and friends, the passing of Gertrude H. "Cookie"
15 Wright; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to the family of Gertrude "Cookie" Wright as a symbol
18 of our sympathy.
