Synopsis As Introduced
Amends the Loan Repayment Assistance for Dentists Act. Provides that the term "dental payments" includes compensation for services rendered under the Covering ALL KIDS Health Insurance Act and the Children's Health Insurance Program Act. Provides that assistance under the educational loan repayment assistance program shall commence once the dentist or dental specialist begins (i) practicing in a designated shortage area and (ii) accepting dental payments. Prohibits the Department of Public Health from setting a minimum amount of dental payments as a condition of eligibility for assistance. Provides that an applicant for assistance must commit to (instead of continue) full-time practice in a designated shortage area for a minimum of 2 years (instead of for 2 years). Provides that the total amount in grants that a person may be awarded must not exceed $25,000 per year for each year of eligibility (instead of for a 4-year period). Prohibits a person from receiving grants for more than 4 years. Effective immediately.

Deletes everything after the enacting clause. Amends the Loan Repayment Assistance for Dentists Act. Requires the Department of Public Health to establish an educational loan repayment assistance program for dental hygienists who practice with a dentist in a designated shortage area in this State; makes related changes. Provides that "dental payments" includes compensation for services rendered under the Covering ALL KIDS Health Insurance Act and the Children's Health Insurance Program Act. Provides that "educational loans" means loans that a person has incurred in attending a dental education program (instead of a dental education program in this State). Removes the limit on the number of applications that the Department may consider. Makes changes concerning eligibility for assistance. Makes changes concerning the length of assistance that may be provided. Provides that successful applicants shall be eligible for a grant award upon execution of the grant agreement and shall then begin to receive grant award payments on a quarterly basis. Provides that the Department shall award grants to otherwise eligible dental applicants by using specified criteria. Effective immediately.
