| AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 574 as follows:

| on page 2, line 21, by replacing "12" with "20"; and
|
| 4 |
| on page 3, immediately below line 5, by inserting the |
| 5 |
| following: |

| "(e) The Commission, in consultation with the Illinois |
| 7 |
| Public Defender Association, shall give preference to those |
| 8 |
| grant applicants under this Section who serve or shall agree to |
| 9 |
| serve in areas of this State in which a significant shortage of |
| 10 |
| public defenders exists.".
