Amends the Election Code. Prohibits county clerks and members of boards of
election commissioners from making public endorsements of candidates and public
questions when the candidates' names and the questions appear on ballots solely of political subdivisions within their election jurisdiction. Effective immediately.

| AN ACT concerning election officials.
|

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |

| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The Election Code is amended by adding Section |
5 |
| 29-12.5 as
follows:
|

| (10 ILCS 5/29-12.5 new)
|

| Sec. 29-12.5. Political endorsements by election |
8 |
| officials. No county clerk
or member of a board of election |
9 |
| commissioners may publicly endorse any
candidate for a public |

| office or any public question when the candidate's name or the |
11 |
| question appears on ballots solely in political subdivisions |
12 |
| within the jurisdiction of that election authority and not |
13 |
| elsewhere in the State. This prohibition includes but is not |
14 |
| limited
to print and broadcast endorsements.

| Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
16 |
| becoming law. |
