    AN ACT concerning transportation.

    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
 
3
represented in the General Assembly:

    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended  by adding 
5
Section 3-611.7 as follows:

    (625 ILCS 5/3-611.7 new)
7
    Sec. 3-611.7. Retired Fire Chief license plates.
8
    (a)  As used in this Section, "retired fire chief" means a

9
person who has served as the fire chief of a municipal fire 
10
department or fire protection district
and has retired as fire 
11
chief from the municipal fire department or fire protection 
12
district.

    (b) The Secretary, upon receipt of a request from a retired 
14
fire chief, accompanied by an application and the appropriate 
15
fee, may issue, to a retired fire chief special registration 
16
plates designated as Retired Fire Chief license plates.  The 
17
special plates issued under this Section shall be affixed only 
18
to passenger vehicles of the first division or motor vehicles 
19
of the second division weighing not more than 8,000 pounds, 
20
owned by the retired fire chief.  Plates issued under this 
21
Section shall expire according to the multi-year procedure 
22
established by Section 3-414.1 of this Code.

    (c)  The design and color of the special plates shall be

wholly within the discretion of the Secretary.  The plates are 
2
not required to designate "Land of Lincoln" as prescribed in 
3
subsection (b) of Section 3-412 of this Code.  The Secretary may 
4
prescribe rules governing the requirements and approval of the 
5
special plates.  The fee for this plate for a vehicle owned by 
6
the retired fire chief shall be the same as the fee prescribed 
7
for first division vehicles in Section 3-806 of this Code.

    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon 
10
becoming law.
