HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, Patients in Illinois hospitals require a 
3
year-round supply of donated blood; and

 
4
    WHEREAS, There are no substitutes or replacements for 
5
blood; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Each year, the Illinois Coalition of Community 
7
Blood Centers collects more than 570,000 blood donations to 
8
care for patients in 175 hospitals throughout 71 Illinois 
9
counties; and

 
10
    WHEREAS, The Coalition's nearly 1,500 blood collection 
11
professionals in Illinois are integral to the donation process 
12
and serve as the stewards of the State's blood supply; and
 
13
    WHEREAS, The professionalism exuded by these dedicated 
14
individuals helps to ensure repeat donations, which is central 
15
to maintain an adequate blood supply; and

 
16
    WHEREAS, Blood collection professionals provide a critical 
17
service to the communities and patients they support by helping 
18
to improve and save lives on a daily basis; and

 
19
    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes the importance of

blood donation through the Blood Donation Act, the Employee 
2
Blood Donation Leave Act, and the Organ Donor Act; therefore, 
3
be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
5
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE 
6
SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the week of 
7
September 13-19, 2009 as  "Blood Collectors Week" in the State 
8
of Illinois; and be it further

 
9
    RESOLVED, That we encourage the citizens of Illinois to 
10
join in the life-saving work of blood collection organizations 
11
by donating blood in their communities.
