HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Hugh A. Muir on the occasion of his 100th birthday on March 2, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Hugh A. Muir was born on March 2, 1909 at 1216 S. 3rd Avenue in Maywood; he attended Emerson Elementary School and Proviso Township High School, where he graduated in 1927; and

WHEREAS, Hugh A. Muir's first job was with the Jerry F. Coughlin Meat Market at 10 N. 5th Avenue in Maywood; he became manager of the Market in 1936, the year he married Natalie Jacobson, with whom he raised two sons and a daughter; he and his brother, Henry, eventually acquired the Jerry Coughlin Meat Market and renamed it the Muir Brothers Meat Market, which they operated from 1948 to 1975; and

WHEREAS, Hugh A. Muir was a charter member of the Maywood Chamber of Commerce, which was established in 1939, and is the chamber's sole surviving Founding Father; and

WHEREAS, During World War II, Hugh A. Muir served as Assistant Fire Chief of the Maywood Civil Defense Fire Department; from 1949 to 1977, he served as a Maywood Village Trustee, during which time he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee and the Fire Committee; he also served as a member of the Police Pension Board; and

WHEREAS, In 1990, the Village of Maywood renamed Iowa Street "Hugh Muir Lane" in honor of Mr. Muir and his many accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, In 1993, Hugh A. Muir received the Maywood-Broadview Kiwanis Club "Citizen of the Year" Award and was also named an Honorary Lifetime Board Member of the Maywood Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber's Installation and Awards Banquet in 1999; in 2001, he was presented the Golden Heritage Award by Operation Uplift; and

WHEREAS, Hugh A. Muir has been a lifetime participant in the Boy Scouts of America and has served as an Assistant Scoutmaster and member of the Thatcher Woods Council; he is also a member of the Wesleyan Church in Broadview, the Lions Club, and the Masonic Fraternity; and

WHEREAS, In his 100 years of life, Hugh A. Muir has contributed much to the Village of Maywood through his activities and his code of ethics; he has inspired countless others as a beacon of Christianity, an outstanding husband, and a wonderful father; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Hugh A. Muir on the occasion of his 100th birthday and wish him many happy and healthy years to come; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Hugh A. Muir as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
