| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The celebration of a special Children's Day in the |
| 3 |
| United States dates back to the 1860s and earlier; Children's |
| 4 |
| Day observations predate both Mother's Day and Father's Day |
| 5 |
| celebrations in the United States; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, The people of the State of Illinois and the United |
| 7 |
| States recognize Mother's Day and Father's Day, yet do not |
| 8 |
| celebrate a Children's Day, a day to celebrate and commit to |
| 9 |
| our children and their future and a day with deep historical |
| 10 |
| roots in our country; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, The Methodist Episcopal Church at the Methodist |
| 12 |
| Conference of 1868 recommended that every second Sunday in June |
| 13 |
| be annually observed as Children's Day; in 1883, the National |
| 14 |
| Council of Congregational Churches and nearly all the state |
| 15 |
| bodies of that denomination in the United States passed |
| 16 |
| resolutions commending the observance of the day, with many |
| 17 |
| other denominations adopting similar recommendations; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, Children are tender and precious gifts to all |
| 19 |
| mankind; they deserve to be given hope, faith, love, and |
| 20 |
| commitment to allow them a successful and bright future; the |
| 21 |
| very act of safeguarding childhood is the noblest achievement |
| 22 |
| of a society; and
