HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The United States of America has an economy that
3 is currently in recession; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The most recently-reported Illinois figures show
5 that in December 2008, our State's unemployment rate was 7.6%;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, In these times, it is urgent that the two United
8 States Senators from Illinois be persons who are able to spend
9 all of their time on lawmaking for economic recovery and who
10 are not distracted by personal challenges, especially
11 challenges of an ethical nature; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Roland Wallace Burris, the current junior senator
13 from the State of Illinois, has stated, for the public record,
14 that he had contacts, prior to his appointment as Senator, with
15 key individuals connected with former Illinois Governor Rod
16 Blagojevich, and he had, during the course of these contacts,
17 made arrangements to take a key role in fundraising efforts for
18 Blagojevich; and
 
19     WHEREAS, These admissions raise grave concerns about
20 Senator Burris's fitness for the public office which he now
21 holds and his ability to serve in his position during the

1 challenging times currently facing our nation; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Many voices of the Illinois public, including the
3 editorial page of the "Chicago Tribune" daily newspaper, in its
4 morning edition of February 18, 2009, have urged Senator Burris
5 to resign from office; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 urge Roland Wallace Burris to resign from his position as a
9 United States Senator from the State of Illinois, effective
10 immediately; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That the State of Illinois enact suitable
12 legislation to enable the people of the State to select a new
13 senator by special statewide election of the people; and be it
14 further
 
15     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this preamble and
16 resolution be presented to the Illinois delegation to the
17 federal House of Representatives, and to the senior and junior
18 federal senators from the State of Illinois.
