2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
S.A. | ||||||
4 | "Jimmie" Harris of Winthrop, who passed away on March 24, 2009; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, S.A. Harris was born December 30, 1916 in Meade, | ||||||
7 | Kansas; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, S.A. Harris operated Artesian Valley Creamery and | ||||||
9 | Produce Business in Harrington, Kansas; he came to Winthrop | ||||||
10 | Harbor in 1946 after serving six and a half years in the United | ||||||
11 | States Navy, serving both as a Recruiting Officer in Kansas | ||||||
12 | City, Missouri and Great Lakes, Illinois and overseas with | ||||||
13 | Joint Army-Navy Intelligence in the Pacific Ocean area; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, S.A. Harris was employed as an auto dealer in | ||||||
15 | Winthrop Harbor from 1949 until 1976 and was a member of the | ||||||
16 | Dealer Advisory Board in Detroit, Michigan, where he | ||||||
17 | represented the Chicago area; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, S.A. Harris was an active member of his community; | ||||||
19 | he served as a Precinct Committeeman; he was a member of the | ||||||
20 | Republican Federation for many years and also headed the local | ||||||
21 | Republican organization; he served as Chairman of the Winthrop |

1 | Harbor Planning Commission from 1958 to 1985; he was a board | ||||||
2 | member and Chairman of Lake County Planning Commission; he | ||||||
3 | spearheaded the establishment of the Winthrop Harbor Volunteer | ||||||
4 | Fire Department and helped create a street numbering system for | ||||||
5 | Winthrop Harbor; he organized and chartered the Winthrop Harbor | ||||||
6 | Lions Club in 1954 and remained active with a club membership | ||||||
7 | of 64; he was also a Past District Governor for Lions of | ||||||
8 | Illinois District 1-F from 1962 to 1963 and served as | ||||||
9 | International Convention Chairman for the Lions of Illinois | ||||||
10 | District 1-F for 25 years; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, S.A. Harris served as President of the Winthrop | ||||||
12 | Harbor School Board; he was the President of the Zion-Winthrop | ||||||
13 | Harbor-Beach Park Chamber of Commerce; he was a board member | ||||||
14 | and past Chairman of Zion State Bank Board of Directors; he | ||||||
15 | served on the Board of First American Bank; he served as Benton | ||||||
16 | Township Clerk and was in charge of the Service Unit of | ||||||
17 | Salvation Army for 25 years; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Currently, S.A. Harris served as a board member | ||||||
19 | and Vice-President of Midwestern Regional Medical Center Board | ||||||
20 | of Trustees, where he served for 25 years; he was Chairman of | ||||||
21 | the Village of Winthrop Harbor Economic Development Committee | ||||||
22 | and the Winthrop Harbor Citizens Police Committee; he was an | ||||||
23 | active member of First Christian Church of Kenosha, Wisconsin | ||||||
24 | since 1950; he also managed Harris Enterprises in Winthrop |

1 | Harbor and was an Associate Member of the Winthrop Harbor | ||||||
2 | Chamber of Commerce; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, S.A. Harris is survived by his loving wife of 66 | ||||||
4 | years, Mary; his children, James Randy (Linda) Harris, Linda | ||||||
5 | (Edward) Isom-Burge, and Patti (Douglas) Gross; and his seven | ||||||
6 | grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
8 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
9 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of S.A. | ||||||
10 | "Jimmie" Harris; and be it further
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the family of S.A. "Jimmie" Harris as an | ||||||
13 | expression of our sympathy.
