HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Joseph P.
4 Burke of Orland Park, who passed away May 1, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago's Back of the Yards
6 neighborhood; he graduated from the University of Illinois at
7 Chicago with a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice and earned
8 a Master's degree in criminal justice from Lewis University;
9 and
 
10     WHEREAS, He met his wife of 34 years, Laura, in high
11 school, and the couple lived on the city's Southwest side for
12 several years before moving to Orland Park; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Mr. Burke joined the Chicago Police Department in
14 the early 1970s; in addition to working on the DEA and FBI task
15 forces, he was also assigned to the cold case squad toward the
16 end of his career; after retiring from the Chicago Police
17 Department, he went to work for the Illinois Department of
18 Corrections in 2003, where his most recent position was chief
19 of investigations and intelligence; and
 
20     WHEREAS, During his distinguished 30-year career with the
21 Chicago Police Department, he worked on task forces with the

1 Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI's anti-terrorism
2 unit, an assignment that took him to Oklahoma City in the
3 aftermath of the federal building bombing; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Mr. Burke was a drummer, longtime member, and past
5 president of the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society of
6 the Chicago Police Department, a charitable organization
7 formed to honor police officers and firefighters killed in the
8 line of duty; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Joseph Burke was the beloved husband of Laura J.
10 (nee Gleason); the loving father of Erin and Claire; the
11 devoted son of the late Joseph P. and Ann (nee Dolan); the dear
12 brother of Chicago Alderman Edward M. (Justice Anne M. Burke)
13 Burke and Illinois State Representative Daniel Burke; and the
14 loving uncle of many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Joseph
18 Burke; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the family of Joseph Burke as a symbol of our
21 sincere sympathy.
