| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. David |
4 |
| S. Fox of Chicago on April 5, 2009; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, He was born on March 13, 1922 in Chicago; he |
6 |
| graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1938; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, He continued in the family tradition by attending |
8 |
| Haverford College, his mother having "enrolled" him at the |
9 |
| tender age of five; and |
10 |
| WHEREAS, He was encouraged, as were his brothers before |
11 |
| him, to write letters home that his parents kept for a record |
12 |
| of his college experiences; he and his wife, in turn, |
13 |
| encouraged their children to do the same; although their |
14 |
| children sent very few letters, they did stay in touch through |
15 |
| plenty of calls which resulted in exceedingly high telephone |
16 |
| bills; and |
17 |
| WHEREAS, After graduating from Haverford, Dr. Fox earned |
18 |
| his medical degree from the University of Chicago; and |
19 |
| WHEREAS, He served his medical internship in the United |
20 |
| States Navy, serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Newport, |

| Rhode Island, before entering World War II; during the war, he |
2 |
| served as a physician aboard troop transport ships from the |
3 |
| West Coast to the Pacific Theater; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, After World War II, Dr. Fox established a surgical |
5 |
| practice in Hyde park at Woodlawn Hospital in 1949; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, He was president of the Illinois Medical Society |
7 |
| from 1978 to 1979; president of the Chicago Medical Society |
8 |
| from 1975 to 1976; and was medical director and director of |
9 |
| medical education from 1979 to 1986 at Woodlawn Hospital; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, He also had general surgery practices at Bethany |
11 |
| and Hyde Park Hospitals from 1986 until 1995; he was vice |
12 |
| president and medical director of Medical Cost Management |
13 |
| Corporation, providing services and programs for health care |
14 |
| plans; he served as chairman of the State medical practice |
15 |
| examining committee of the Illinois Department of Registration |
16 |
| and Education from 1981 to 1986; and he was a past director of |
17 |
| the Illinois Foundation for Medical Review; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Fox is remembered as a kind man who cared |
19 |
| about his patients, treating their medical symptoms in the |
20 |
| context of the whole person; he had an easy and comfortable way |
21 |
| about him that showed he truly enjoyed his colleagues, his |
22 |
| friends, and his patients; and
|

| WHEREAS, Dr. Fox was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie |
2 |
| (nee Kelly) and his daughter, Stephanie; and
|
3 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. David S. Fox is survived by his sons, Andrew |
4 |
| (Patricia), David Jr. (Janet), Brian (Jan), Dr. John (Monica), |
5 |
| and Paul (Nancy); his ten grandchildren; his great-grandchild; |
6 |
| and his son-in-law, Dr. Thomas Ward; therefore, be it
|
7 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
8 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
9 |
| mourn, along with his family, friends, and people whose lives |
10 |
| he touched throughout the years, the passing of Dr. David S. |
11 |
| Fox; and be it further
|
12 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
13 |
| presented to the family of Dr. David S. Fox as a symbol of our |
14 |
| sincere sympathy and esteem.
