| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, In 1977, the Marchegiana Society of Chicago |
| 3 |
| Heights chose to establish a Sister City affiliation with San |
| 4 |
| Benedetto del Tronto, Provincia della Marche, Italy, the city |
| 5 |
| and region from which many Chicago Heights families emigrated |
| 6 |
| to the United States; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, The San Benedetto del Tronto, Marche, Italy - |
| 8 |
| Chicago Heights Sister City affiliation was created on June 19, |
| 9 |
| 1977 by proclamation and by unanimous vote of both city |
| 10 |
| councils; the affiliation was celebrated at that time by |
| 11 |
| official visits of citizens and public officials to both Sister |
| 12 |
| Cities; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Since that time, exchanges of both a casual and |
| 14 |
| official nature have occurred, creating opportunities for |
| 15 |
| thousands of residents to visit and enjoy the culture and |
| 16 |
| traditions to be found in both locations; and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, Every year, many people from the City of Chicago |
| 18 |
| Heights return to visit and to renew the ties of family and |
| 19 |
| friendship that keep the cities bound as one people; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, In 1984, Chicago Heights School District 170 and |
| 21 |
| the schools of San Benedetto del Tronto were mutually |

| instrumental in establishing a student exchange that has grown |
| 2 |
| and become a model of successful Sister City projects; and
|
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, Each year, approximately two dozen high school age |
| 4 |
| students from Chicago Heights are hosted in the San Benedetto |
| 5 |
| region; in alternate years, a similar number of students from |
| 6 |
| San Benedetto are hosted by families in and around Chicago |
| 7 |
| Heights; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, This exchange has prospered and grown to the |
| 9 |
| extent that over a thousand students have participated and |
| 10 |
| enjoyed the cultural, educational, and intellectual |
| 11 |
| stimulation engendered by foreign travel; for many, the |
| 12 |
| opportunity to create friendships that may last a lifetime, or |
| 13 |
| the opportunity to reestablish links with family that are |
| 14 |
| well-known or, as yet, unrecognized; therefore, be it
|
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 16 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 17 |
| urge the citizens of the State of Illinois to honor the San |
| 18 |
| Benedetto del Tronto, Marche, Italy - Chicago Heights Sister |
| 19 |
| City affiliation and express our continued admiration and |
| 20 |
| support for the affiliation; and be it further
|
| 21 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 22 |
| presented to Alex Lopez, Mayor of the City of Chicago Heights, |
