HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Vergil H. Fletcher of Collinsville, who passed away on June 30, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Vergil Fletcher was born on July 1, 1915; he served his country with pride and distinction as a member of the United States Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Vergil Fletcher retired after 32 years as head basketball coach of Collinsville High School, where he led his teams to two State titles in 1961 and 1965; he was named Illinois National High School Coach of the Year in 1972 and was picked as one of the greatest high school coaches of the century; and

WHEREAS, Vergil Fletcher was a member of the American Legion Post 365 in Collinsville, the Collinsville Noontime Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, and Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville; and

WHEREAS, Vergil Fletcher was preceded in death by his parents, John and Etta Fletcher; his brother, Cecil; and his sisters, Helen Baker, Audra Brown, and Rose Mitchell; and

WHEREAS, Vergil Fletcher is survived by his wife, Violet Fletcher, whom he married on June 9, 1938; his children, Marietta (Dr. Marion) Thompson, Dr. Marlene (Dr. Joseph) Rotter, Marcia Yates, Marian (Bruce) Evans, Mike (Margie) Fletcher, and Marc (Joan) Fletcher; his sisters, Marian Mauzy and Ruby Kay Vozarth; his brother, Jack Fletcher; and his 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Vergil H. Fletcher; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Vergil Fletcher as an expression of our sympathy.
