HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of 
4
Father Perez Council #1444 Knights of Columbus in Chicago on 
5
the 100th anniversary of the Order; and
  
 
6
    WHEREAS, The Council began at the corner of 63rd Street and 
7
Ashland Avenue in Chicago after men returning from morning Mass 
8
at St. Brendan's discussed a new council; and
  
 
9
    WHEREAS, The Father Perez Council was formed and instituted 
10
on November 7, 1909 in the Oakland Music Hall at 40th Street 
11
and Cottage Grove Avenue by Illinois State Deputy James Maher; 
12
and
  
 
13
    WHEREAS, The Council was named after Father Perez, who had 
14
given aid and shelter to Christopher Columbus, reviving his 
15
drooping spirits and arranging for his audience at the court of 
16
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella; and
  
 
17
    WHEREAS, The watch words of "Charity, Unity, Fraternity, 
18
and Patriotism and their loyalties to Family, Church, Youth, 
19
and Community" have been a part of every man who has joined the 
20
Father Perez Council in the last 100 years; and

    WHEREAS, The Brother Knights of Father Perez have been an 
2
active part of the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood in Chicago for 
3
the last 100 years; in the last 10 years they have raised over 
4
$325,000 for the mentally handicapped and physically 
5
challenged; they have given scholarships to young men and women 
6
attending Catholic high schools; and they have supported area 
7
churches through outreach programs; and
 
8
    WHEREAS, The 100th anniversary of the Order will be 
9
celebrated on November 7, 2009 with a celebration Mass, a 
10
dinner and a dance at the beautiful Gaelic Park; therefore, be 
11
it

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
13
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
14
congratulate the members of Father Perez Council #1444 Knights 
15
of Columbus and wish them continued success in the future; and 
16
be it further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
18
presented to the members of Father Perez Council #1444 as a 
19
symbol of our respect and esteem.
