| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate the students, |
| 4 |
| faculty, and administration of Spoon River College on the |
| 5 |
| occasion of the college's 50th anniversary on October 17, 2009; |
| 6 |
| and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, The rich history of Spoon River College began on |
| 8 |
| October 17, 1959, when the citizens of Canton Union School |
| 9 |
| District No. 66 voted to establish a junior college in Canton; |
| 10 |
| the new junior college was named Canton Community College and |
| 11 |
| became the first public junior college to be organized in west |
| 12 |
| central Illinois; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, In 1968, Canton Community College became a Class I |
| 14 |
| institution under the Illinois Public Junior College Act and |
| 15 |
| was separated from the public school district by forming Junior |
| 16 |
| College District 534; the college then became known as Spoon |
| 17 |
| River College; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, From its humble origins on the second floor of |
| 19 |
| Canton Senior High School, Spoon River College has grown to |
| 20 |
| include facilities in Havana, Macomb, and Rushville, all of |
| 21 |
| which serve the 1,500-square mile Illinois Community College |
| 22 |
| District 534; the college currently offers 60 associate degree, |
