| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of U.S. Army |
4 |
| Sergeant 1st Class Christopher D. Shaw of Natchez, Mississippi, |
5 |
| who died in action on September 29, 2009, on Jolo Island, |
6 |
| Philippines; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, SFC Christopher Shaw enlisted in the United States |
8 |
| Army Reserve on November 22, 1994, while attending Texas |
9 |
| Southern University in Houston on a track and field |
10 |
| scholarship; in May of 1995, he decided to put his education on |
11 |
| hold and joined the active-duty Army as a forward observer; and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, After completion of basic training, advanced |
13 |
| individual training, and the U.S. Army Airborne School, SFC |
14 |
| Christopher Shaw was assigned as a fire support specialist to |
15 |
| the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Lewis, |
16 |
| Washington; in 1997, he volunteered for the Special Forces |
17 |
| Assessment and Selection course and completed the Special |
18 |
| Forces Qualification Course in March of 1999; he later served |
19 |
| as an instructor at the Special Forces Qualification Course at |
20 |
| Camp Mackall, North Carolina and subsequently returned to the |
21 |
| 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Lewis; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, SFC Christopher Shaw was currently assigned to the |
|
|

| 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort |

| Lewis, Washington; he was on his second deployment in support |
3 |
| of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines at the time of his |
4 |
| passing; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, SFC Christopher Shaw was the recipient of numerous |
6 |
| awards and decorations for his meritorious service, including |
7 |
| Meritorious Service Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, Army |
8 |
| Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense |
9 |
| Service Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary |
10 |
| Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the |
11 |
| Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the |
12 |
| Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Philippine Presidential |
13 |
| Unit citation; he earned the Special Forces tab, the Ranger |
14 |
| tab, and the Parachutist Badge; he was posthumously awarded the |
15 |
| Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service |
16 |
| Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge; and |
17 |
| WHEREAS, SFC Christopher Shaw earned his bachelor's degree |
18 |
| in history from Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, New |
19 |
| Jersey; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, SFC Christopher Shaw is survived by his wife, |
21 |
| Attina; his children, Darian Shaw, Erielle Smith, Jalyn Smith, |
22 |
| Dante Shaw, and Cydney Shaw; his mother and stepfather, Camille |
23 |
| and Willie Felton; his father, Walter Owens; his brothers, |

| Orlando Shaw and Maurey Owens; and his sisters, Kenya Shaw and |

| Gwen Owens; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
4 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
5 |
| mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of |
6 |
| Sergeant 1st Class Christopher D. Shaw; and be it further
|
7 |
| RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of SFC Christopher Shaw |
8 |
| and his willingness to serve our country, which led to him |
9 |
| making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further |
10 |
| RESOLVED, a suitable copy of this resolution be presented |
11 |
| to the family of SFC Christopher Shaw as an expression of our |
12 |
| sympathy.
