| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to recognize and congratulate |
| 4 |
| Peter S. Knobel as he retires after 30 years of outstanding |
| 5 |
| leadership in the greater Jewish and non-Jewish community as |
| 6 |
| the Senior Rabbi of Beth Emet the Free Synogogue (Beth Emet); |
| 7 |
| and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Beth Emet is a reform congregation that has served |
| 9 |
| Evanston and the surrounding communities for more than 50 |
| 10 |
| years; Beth Emet balances innovation and tradition in all |
| 11 |
| aspects of communal life; Beth Emet seeks creative ways to |
| 12 |
| integrate the new with the old in worship, education, and |
| 13 |
| community-strengthening, often initiating meaningful change; |
| 14 |
| and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, During Rabbi Knobel's tenure, he cultivated |
| 16 |
| growth and change at Beth Emet and in the greater community; he |
| 17 |
| represented Beth Emet while serving on the Board of many local |
| 18 |
| and national institutions, including the Association of Reform |
| 19 |
| Zionists of America, Union for Reform Judaism, the American |
| 20 |
| Jewish Committee, the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan |
| 21 |
| Chicago, and the Council for Parliament of the World's |
| 22 |
| Religions; and
|

| WHEREAS, Rabbi Knobel has been a leader in the reform |
| 2 |
| Jewish movement and been a long-time advocate for social |
| 3 |
| action; and
|
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, As an advocate for social action, Rabbi Knobel has |
| 5 |
| led and participated on committees for many of the Reform |
| 6 |
| Rabbinical and nationally-recognized Jewish organizations |
| 7 |
| efforts for over 40 years; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Rabbi Knobel was the Past President of the Chicago |
| 9 |
| Board of Rabbis and the Chicago Association of Reform Rabbis; |
| 10 |
| he co-chaired the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) |
| 11 |
| Project; he was involved in the Development of Liturgy, |
| 12 |
| sponsored by the Lilly Endowment and the Nathan Cummings |
| 13 |
| Foundation; he chaired the CCAR Ad Hoc Siddur Editorial |
| 14 |
| Committee; he served as Director of the Resource Center for |
| 15 |
| Jewish Health Care Ethics and has participated as a member on |
| 16 |
| the Illinois State Attorney's Task Force on the Foregoing of |
| 17 |
| Life Sustaining Treatment while putting special emphasis on |
| 18 |
| health, healing, death, and dying; and |
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, Rabbi Knobel's experience and education make him a |
| 20 |
| sought-after speaker and nationally recognized expert in the |
| 21 |
| field of Jewish studies and liturgy; therefore, be it
|
| 22 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |

| congratulate Rabbi Peter S. Knobel on all his success and wish |

| him the best in the future as he continues to be an advocate |
| 4 |
| for faith, peace, and learning for all people; and be it |
| 5 |
| further
