2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Lafayette | ||||||
4 | Shaw of Danville, who passed away on February 28, 2010; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was elected to serve on the | ||||||
6 | Danville City Council in 1993; he served as alderman until | ||||||
7 | 1996; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Prior to his service as an alderman, Lafayette | ||||||
9 | Shaw served as a fixture as a custodian with the City of | ||||||
10 | Danville 34 years until his retirement in 1991; in 1987, he | ||||||
11 | retired from General Motors; he also worked at Crosspoint Human | ||||||
12 | Services; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a member of the Carter | ||||||
14 | Metropolitan C.M.E. Church since 1946; he was a member of the | ||||||
15 | church's steward board, serving as the board's chairman for | ||||||
16 | about 40 years; he was president of the board of stewards for | ||||||
17 | the Chicago district; he served as an usher, class leader, and | ||||||
18 | trustee; he also earned an award from the Third Episcopal | ||||||
19 | District for his work with the church in 2006; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was involved in the planning of | ||||||
21 | renovations to Carver Park in Danville; and

1 | WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a Golden Gloves boxer in the | ||||||
2 | 1940s; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a member of the local chapter | ||||||
4 | of the NAACP, the MLK Celebration Committee, and the Illinois | ||||||
5 | Elks Lodge 147; he was honored with the past grand exalted | ||||||
6 | ruler degree in 1984 and also the Martin Luther King | ||||||
7 | Humanitarian Award; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was named a special deputy sheriff | ||||||
9 | under Sheriff Clyde Tabor and special policeman under two | ||||||
10 | mayors; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw will be remembered by all who knew | ||||||
12 | and loved him as a passionate, confident, humorous, and strong | ||||||
13 | man whose dedication to his family and his community were | ||||||
14 | unmatched; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
16 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
17 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | ||||||
18 | Lafayette Shaw; and be it further
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the family of Lafayette Shaw as an expression of |

1 | our sympathy.
