HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to honor the Sons of the American 
4
Legion on the 78th anniversary of the organization; and
  
 
5
    WHEREAS, The American Legion voted to create the Sons of 
6
the American Legion in 1932; the first Sons of the American 
7
Legion charter was given to the Bruce P. Robinson Post #133 
8
Squadron in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1933; and
  
 
9
    WHEREAS, The Sons of the American Legion is an organization 
10
within the American Legion, made up of boys and men of all ages 
11
whose parents or grandparents served in the United States 
12
military and who are or were eligible for membership in the 
13
American Legion; and
  
 
14
    WHEREAS, There are currently more than 335,000 Sons of the 
15
American Legion members in more than 5,500 squadrons in all 50 
16
states and 9 foreign countries; there are 238 squadrons in 
17
Illinois with more than 14,800 members; and
  
 
18
    WHEREAS, Since the first year, the Sons of the American 
19
Legion has recorded new membership records, 28 in Illinois; in 
20
1990 membership exceeded 100,000 members and in 2009 the 
21
335,000 mark was broken; and

    WHEREAS, The Sons of the American Legion donates millions 
2
of dollars and contributes millions of man hours to American 
3
Legion programs and local charities across the United States; 
4
in combination with the American Legion and the American Legion 
5
Auxiliary, the three groups care for our nation's veterans and 
6
their families, work to improve the quality of life for 
7
children, preserve the traditions and values of the United 
8
States, and teach fundamentals of good citizenship; therefore, 
9
be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
11
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
12
congratulate the members of the Sons of the American Legion, 
13
Detachment of Illinois, on a fabulously successful year, and 
14
declare June 26, 2010, Sons of the American Legion Day in the 
15
State of Illinois; and be it further
  
 
16
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
17
presented to a representative of the Sons of the American 
18
Legion, Detachment of Illinois.
