| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former |
| 4 |
| Southern Illinois University-Carbondale Chancellor John C. |
| 5 |
| Guyon, who passed away on March 17, 2010; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, John Guyon was a native of Washington, |
| 7 |
| Pennsylvania; he came to Southern Illinois |
| 8 |
| University-Carbondale in 1974, first serving as dean of the |
| 9 |
| College of Science before becoming associate vice chancellor |
| 10 |
| for research and dean of the Graduate School; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Before coming to Southern Illinois |
| 12 |
| University-Carbondale, John Guyon served at Memphis State |
| 13 |
| University as a professor and chair of the chemistry department |
| 14 |
| from 1971 to 1974; prior to Memphis State University, he held |
| 15 |
| the same positions at the University of Missouri in Columbia; |
| 16 |
| and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, He earned his doctoral degree in analytical |
| 18 |
| chemistry from Purdue University and was a veteran of the |
| 19 |
| United States Army; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, John Guyon stepped in as acting chancellor in 1987 |
| 21 |
| and was chosen to fill the post permanently seven months later; |

| at that time Southern Illinois University-Carbondale had nine |
| 2 |
| colleges, and graduate, medical, and law schools; and
|
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, During his years as chancellor, Southern Illinois |
| 4 |
| University-Carbondale opened a campus in Japan and added |
| 5 |
| several new buildings, including the Dunn-Richmond Economic |
| 6 |
| Development Center; and |
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, John Guyon retired in 1996 as Chancellor Emeritus |
| 8 |
| of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, a title he |
| 9 |
| retained until his passing; and |
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, John Guyon is survived by his wife, Patricia; his |
| 11 |
| son, John II; and his daughter, Cynthia; he was preceded in |
| 12 |
| death by his first wife, Joyce; therefore, be it
|
| 13 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 14 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 15 |
| mourn, along with his family, friends, and the alumni and staff |
| 16 |
| of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, the passing of |
| 17 |
| former Chancellor John Guyon; and be it further
|
| 18 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 19 |
| presented to the family of John Guyon as a symbol of our |
| 20 |
| sincere sympathy.
