| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the |
| 4 |
| Village of Buffalo Grove for winning the 2010 Environmental |
| 5 |
| Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association |
| 6 |
| for the stabilization and naturalization of the White Pine |
| 7 |
| Drainage Channel; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, The Village of Buffalo Grove has actively worked |
| 9 |
| on the implementation of a project that would address erosion |
| 10 |
| and non-point source pollution along the White Pine, an urban |
| 11 |
| drainage channel that discharges directly into Buffalo Creek |
| 12 |
| and the Des Plaines River System, since early 2005; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, The White Pine Drainage Channel project has |
| 14 |
| incorporated numerous innovative restoration methods, such as |
| 15 |
| the use of both native plant bio-engineering, along with |
| 16 |
| traditional armoring techniques, to create a system that could |
| 17 |
| withstand the volatile nature of the urban waterway; the |
| 18 |
| addition of a pedestrian pathway along the channel and the |
| 19 |
| installation of educational signage seeks to help to improve |
| 20 |
| the public's awareness and understanding as to the importance |
| 21 |
| of such restoration projects; embedded boulders were placed at |
| 22 |
| the toe of the bank to reduce the shear stresses caused during |
| 23 |
| high flow periods, while native plantings and turf reinforcing |
