| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate NASA Astronaut Dr. |
4 |
| Robert L. Satcher, Jr., on his November of 2009 first flight |
5 |
| into space; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, He was born September 22, 1965, in Hampton, |
7 |
| Virginia; he is married to the former D'Juanna O. White, MPH, |
8 |
| M.D. of New York, New York and they have two children; he |
9 |
| enjoys running, scuba diving, and reading; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, He graduated from Denmark-Olar High School in |
11 |
| Denmark, South Carolina in 1982; he received a bachelor of |
12 |
| science degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts |
13 |
| Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1986; a doctor of philosophy |
14 |
| in chemical engineering from MIT in 1993; a doctorate of |
15 |
| medicine degree from Harvard Medical School in 1994; he |
16 |
| completed an internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at |
17 |
| the University of California, San Francisco, in 2000; he did |
18 |
| postdoctoral research fellowships at MIT in 1994 and at the |
19 |
| University of California, Berkeley in 1998; and he completed a |
20 |
| fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at the University of |
21 |
| Florida in 2001; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, His professional qualifications include: the |

| WHEREAS, He has served as an Assistant Professor at The |

| Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, in the |
10 |
| Department of Orthopaedic Surgery; Dr. Satcher also held an |
11 |
| appointment as an Attending Physician in Orthopaedic Surgery at |
12 |
| Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, specializing in |
13 |
| Musculoskeletal Oncology; and has an Adjunct Appointment in The |
14 |
| Biomedical Engineering Department at Northeastern University |
15 |
| School of Engineering; and |
16 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Satcher was also a member of the Robert H. |
17 |
| Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Institute for |
18 |
| Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Advanced Medicine at |
19 |
| Northwestern University; prior to this, he completed clinical |
20 |
| fellowships in Musculoskeletal Oncology at the University of |
21 |
| Florida; and as Schweitzer Fellow at the Albert Schweitzer |
22 |
| Hospital, Lambarene, Gabon; Dr. Satcher also completed |
23 |
| numerous medical missions for outreach care to underserved |
24 |
| areas in Nicaraugua, Venezuala, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and |

| WHEREAS, His prior experience in engineering includes |

| internships at E.I. DuPont deNemours & Company, Inc., |
4 |
| Wilmington, Delaware, in the Textile Fibers Research Group, and |
5 |
| the Polymer Products Division; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Satcher has been active in numerous community |
7 |
| organizations including Big Brother for Youth at Risk |
8 |
| Counseling Program, Department of Corrections, San Francisco, |
9 |
| California; Tutor for Black Student's Union Tutorial Program, |
10 |
| MIT; National Society of Black Engineers; American Institute of |
11 |
| Chemical Engineering; Supervising Adult for Cub Scout Camp for |
12 |
| Boys, Nashville, Tennessee; Open Airways Tutor (asthma |
13 |
| awareness); Proctor for Freshman Dormitory at Harvard |
14 |
| University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Lay Episcopal Minister |
15 |
| (primary responsibility is visiting sick and shut in members of |
16 |
| church) at St. Edmund's Episcopal Church, Chicago, and at St. |
17 |
| James Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas; and |
18 |
| WHEREAS, He was selected by NASA in May 2004; in February |
19 |
| 2006 he completed Astronaut Candidate Training that included |
20 |
| scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in |
21 |
| Shuttle and International Space Station systems, physiological |
22 |
| training, T-38 flight training, and water and wilderness |
23 |
| survival training; he completed his first flight on STS-129 in |
|
|

| November 2009 and has logged over 259 hours in space, including |
2 |
| 12 hours and 19 minutes in 2 EVAs; therefore, be it
|
3 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
4 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
5 |
| congratulate Dr. Satcher on his first flight into space and |
6 |
| wish him continued success for years to come; and be it further
|
7 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
8 |
| presented to NASA Astronaut Dr. Robert Satcher, Jr., as a |
9 |
| symbol of our respect and esteem.
