| WHEREAS, The 1st week of May is designated as National Safe |
3 |
| Drinking Water Week; and |
4 |
| WHEREAS, Water is our most valuable natural resource; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Tap water provides vital public health and fire |
6 |
| protection; tap water also provides support for our economy and |
7 |
| sustains the quality of life we enjoy; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Americans consume approximately 50-plus gallons |
9 |
| of water a day on average; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, All measures of a successful society, including |
11 |
| low mortality rates, economic growth and diversity, |
12 |
| productivity, and public safety, are all in some way related to |
13 |
| access to safe drinking water; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Every citizen is called upon to help protect our |
15 |
| source waters from pollution and to promote water conservation; |
16 |
| the United States Environmental Protection Agency suggests |
17 |
| that if each resident fixed all their household water leaks and |
18 |
| put in low-flow shower heads today, they could reduce their |
19 |
| water consumption by 25%; and
|

| WHEREAS, True cost pricing of water is an important element |
2 |
| in present and future water conservation, in contrast to water |
3 |
| rates that are artificially low due to various subsidies; and |
4 |
| WHEREAS, It is critical to the future health and growth of |
5 |
| the State of Illinois that both private and public systems |
6 |
| continue to invest in our water infrastructure; the U.S. EPA |
7 |
| estimates that there is a $330 billion gap in water |
8 |
| infrastructure investment throughout our nation; the State of |
9 |
| Illinois should continue to promote investment in its water |
10 |
| infrastructure both in public and private systems; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, It is imperative that adequate funding be made |
12 |
| available for the State of Illinois to ensure that essential |
13 |
| research and analysis of Illinois' current and future water |
14 |
| needs can be done by organizations such as the Illinois Water |
15 |
| Survey and the State Regional Water Supply Committees; |
16 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
18 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
19 |
| join with the rest of the nation in celebrating National |
20 |
| Drinking Water Week and applaud the workers who work hard every |
21 |
| day to ensure that the citizens of the State of Illinois have |
22 |
| safe, fresh, reliable, high-quality drinking water; and be it |
