| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Robert S. |
4 |
| Nielson on the occasion of his retirement as the Superintendent |
5 |
| of Schools for Bloomington Public School District 87 on June |
6 |
| 30, 2010 after 33 years of dedicated service to Illinois |
7 |
| citizens; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson earned his bachelor's degree |
9 |
| from Northeastern Illinois University in 1976, his master's |
10 |
| degree from Northeastern Illinois University in 1979, his |
11 |
| Advanced Certificate in Educational Administration from the |
12 |
| University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1986, and his |
13 |
| Doctor of Education degree from the University of Illinois at |
14 |
| Urbana-Champaign in 1993; and |
15 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson began his professional career |
16 |
| as a social studies teacher and coach of football and boys' |
17 |
| basketball at Maine East High School in Park Ridge from 1977 to |
18 |
| 1979; and |
19 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson successfully taught social |
20 |
| studies to at-risk students at Downers Grove South High School |
21 |
| from 1979 to 1986; during this time, he served in positions |
22 |
| with the Downers Grove South Education Association and the |
|

| Principal Advisory Committee and coached football and girls' |
2 |
| basketball; and |
3 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson further dedicated himself to |
4 |
| the education of Illinois citizens by serving as Division |
5 |
| Leader for Foreign Language, Social Studies, Physical |
6 |
| Education, and Health at Crete-Monee High School in Crete, |
7 |
| Illinois, where he supported his fellow educators among school |
8 |
| administration and worked in the development of the school |
9 |
| curriculum; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson continued serving the diverse |
11 |
| student population of Crete-Monee High School as Associate |
12 |
| Principal from 1989 to 1991, by overseeing the advancement of |
13 |
| curriculum and educational development while maintaining the |
14 |
| daily functioning of the school body; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson went on to serve as Principal |
16 |
| for the students and staff of Urbana High School from 1991 to |
17 |
| 1993, where he dedicated himself to maximizing the personal |
18 |
| success of each student, faculty member, and staff member, |
19 |
| while garnering the involvement of parents; and |
20 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson continued to serve Urbana |
21 |
| School District 116 as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & |
22 |
| Instruction from 1993 to 1998, where he coordinated and |
|

| supervised community partnerships, school improvements, and |
2 |
| administration and staff development, while developing a |
3 |
| curriculum to ensure the success of a student population with |
4 |
| varied and specialized needs; and |
5 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson has served as Superintendent of |
6 |
| Schools for Bloomington Public School District 87 since 1998, |
7 |
| where he has provided over 12 years of leadership and support |
8 |
| for the students, faculty, staff, parents, and community |
9 |
| leaders of Bloomington; and |
10 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson has been the recipient of many |
11 |
| distinguished recognitions and awards for his dedication as an |
12 |
| educator and community member, including the Illinois |
13 |
| Association of School Administrators' Illinois Superintendent |
14 |
| of the Year Award, the Van Miller Distinguished |
15 |
| Scholar-Practitioner Award from the Illinois Association of |
16 |
| School Administrators and the University of Illinois |
17 |
| Department of Education, the Illinois State Board of Education |
18 |
| Those Who Excel Award, the Evelyn Cobb Service Award from the |
19 |
| McLean County Community COMPACT, and the University of Illinois |
20 |
| Education Administration Alumni Association Distinguished |
21 |
| Achievement Award; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson has served the State and his |
23 |
| community in numerous capacities, such as former President for |
|
|

| the Large Unit District Association, Chairman of the State |
2 |
| Accountability Appeals Committee, member of the Governor's |
3 |
| Education Task Force, member of the Council of Chief State |
4 |
| School Officers Formative Assessment Advisory Group, Illinois |
5 |
| Delegate to the Education Commission of the States, and member |
6 |
| of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago Task |
7 |
| Force on Teacher Education and Professional Development; and |
8 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson has contributed to many |
9 |
| publications and presentations and has joined in numerous |
10 |
| professional associations, which has furthered the success of |
11 |
| educating Illinois citizens; and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Nielson has served his community, his |
13 |
| profession, and the State of Illinois with intelligence, |
14 |
| dedication, and the high integrity; therefore, be it
|
15 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
16 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
17 |
| congratulate Dr. Robert S. Nielson on the occasion of his |
18 |
| retirement and wish him many happy and healthy retirement |
19 |
| years; and be it further
|
20 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
21 |
| presented to Dr. Robert Nielson as a symbol of our esteem and |
22 |
| respect.
