| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Joan Dawson on |
4 |
| her retirement from the University of Illinois at |
5 |
| Urbana-Champaign; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Joan Dawson has served as a valuable member of |
7 |
| the faculty of the Department of Molecular and Integrative |
8 |
| Physiology and the College of Medicine at the University of |
9 |
| Illinois at Urbana for 23 years; she was also a member of the |
10 |
| faculties of Bioengineering, the Department of Obstetrics and |
11 |
| Gynecology at the Urbana campus, and the Department of |
12 |
| Pathology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in |
13 |
| Chicago; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Dawson received her B.S. degree in Biology |
15 |
| from Columbia University and her Ph.D in Pharmacology from the |
16 |
| University of Pennsylvania; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Dawson made major contributions to outreach |
18 |
| efforts for the University to K-12 education as founding |
19 |
| director of Project SEARCH (Science Education and Research for |
20 |
| Children); as an initial organizer and contributor to |
21 |
| CHICKSCOPE, a project of the Beckman Institute at the |
22 |
| University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign which allows K-12 |
|

| students, through Internet access, to access data generated |
2 |
| from the latest scientific instruments; and as a board member |
3 |
| and officer for the Countryside School in Champaign; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Dawson has been a pioneer in the use of |
5 |
| Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in the study of biological |
6 |
| systems, including living organisms; she has made outstanding |
7 |
| contributions to the understanding of cell metabolism and |
8 |
| function using NMR; she has collaborated with Professor Paul |
9 |
| Lauterbur, who received a Nobel prize for adapting NMR for |
10 |
| study of living tissues; she published over 50 research papers |
11 |
| and reviews and 100 meeting abstracts on her work; and she |
12 |
| served on the National Institutes of Health research review |
13 |
| panels; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Dawson has received a number of awards for her |
15 |
| academic and community service, including the Merit Award from |
16 |
| the Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology; the Blue |
17 |
| Ribbon (Magna cum Laude) for a paper presented to the Society |
18 |
| of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in New York; and a Volunteer |
19 |
| Service Award from the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club in |
20 |
| Champaign, for Project SEARCH; and |
21 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Dawson was married to the late Professor Paul |
22 |
| Lauterbur, Nobel laureate; and they have one child; therefore, |
23 |

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
3 |
| congratulate Dr. Joan Dawson on her retirement, thank her for |
4 |
| her years of service, and wish her the best in all her future |
5 |
| endeavors; and be it further
|
6 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
7 |
| presented to Dr. Joan Dawson as a symbol of our respect and |
8 |
| esteem.
