HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the administration and staff of the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) on the occasion of being named the 2010 Member Food Bank of the Year by Feeding America; and

WHEREAS, Feeding America is the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief organization; the organization supplies food to more than 37 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including more than 14 million children and nearly 3 million seniors; the organization has more than 200 member food banks that serve the entire United States and Puerto Rico; and

WHEREAS, Every year, Feeding America recognizes a member food bank for outstanding leadership in programs, advocacy, and fundraising, with its Member Food Bank of the Year designation as the top honor; and

WHEREAS, The Northern Illinois Food Bank is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in 1983 that provides food to all those in need through its 520 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and youth feeding sites in 13 counties; and

WHEREAS, The Northern Illinois Food Bank provides food for an estimated 502,400 different people every year, a 168% increase from 2006; more than 60,000 different people are fed at NIFB every week, a 65% increase from 2006; NIFB distributed over 27 million pounds of food in FY2009; and

WHEREAS, The Northern Illinois Food Bank has received a Charity Navigator 4-Star Rating for 6 consecutive years, a feat only accomplished by 2% of American charities; NIFB has also piloted and led the way for many innovative programs now being modeled throughout the nation, including Express Stamps, Food Recovery, the BackPack Program, the Super Snack Program, and Hunger Action Month outreach; and

WHEREAS, The administration and staff of the Northern Illinois Food Bank serve as models of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the administration and staff of the Northern Illinois Food Bank on the occasion of being named the 2010 Member Food Bank of the Year by Feeding America and wish them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Northern Illinois Food Bank as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
