| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, Electricity has become an invisible, but integral | ||||||
| 3 | force in our lives, our economy, and our culture, providing | ||||||
| 4 | untold services upon which our families and communities depend | ||||||
| 5 | everyday; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Warmer weather brings people outdoors to enjoy | ||||||
| 7 | recreational activities, making awareness of potential | ||||||
| 8 | electrical hazards a vital safety consideration; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Spring is the ideal time for making home | ||||||
| 10 | improvements that may include electrical repair, engaging in | ||||||
| 11 | landscaping projects that may inadvertently touch buried | ||||||
| 12 | utility lines; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Spring weather frequently causes basement | ||||||
| 14 | flooding that allows water to conduct fatal electric current | ||||||
| 15 | outward from electrical appliances and power sources; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Citizens are encouraged to check their homes and | ||||||
| 17 | workplaces for possible electrical hazards to help protect | ||||||
| 18 | lives and property, such as loose wall receptacles and wires, | ||||||
| 19 | improperly used extension cords, and overloaded circuits; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Citizens are encouraged to test their smoke | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | detectors and ground fault circuit interrupters monthly and | ||||||
| 2 | after every major electrical storm; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, The U.S. Fire Administration reports electrical | ||||||
| 4 | problems last year accounted for 67,800 fires, 485 deaths, | ||||||
| 5 | 2,305 injuries, and more than $1.4 billion in property losses | ||||||
| 6 | from electrical fires that were preventable; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, More than five people in the workplace and one | ||||||
| 8 | person in the home are electrocuted each week; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Following basic electrical safety precautions can | ||||||
| 10 | help prevent injury or death to thousands of people each year; | ||||||
| 11 | and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, The Energy Education Council's Safe Electricity | ||||||
| 13 | Program is the largest public outreach program in the nation; | ||||||
| 14 | and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, The SafeElectricity.org website is an online | ||||||
| 16 | library of videos, articles, teacher lesson plans, youth games | ||||||
| 17 | and activities, and more; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, The Council on Safe Electricity serves consumers | ||||||
| 19 | nationwide from their headquarters in Springfield, supporting | ||||||
| 20 | this vital initiative, promoting a healthy respect for | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | electricity and educating the public about the safe use of | ||||||
| 2 | electrical appliances and safety practices around electrical | ||||||
| 3 | equipment; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 5 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 6 | designate the month of May 2010 and every May thereafter as | ||||||
| 7 | Safe Electricity Month in the State of Illinois, and urge the | ||||||
| 8 | citizens of the State to educate themselves on the importance | ||||||
| 9 | of the safe use of electricity.
