HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Glenbard East High School was the second high school in School District 87, and opened in 1959; Principal William Rider, the first principal, welcomed 525 students and a staff of 28 to the new school; at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, Principal Josh Chambers welcomed 2,626 students and 180 staff members on the first day of classes; and

WHEREAS, Glenbard East continues to maintain a "tradition of excellence" after all the years; Newsweek magazine has listed Glenbard East as a top High School in America for two consecutive years, an example of the varied academic offerings available at the school; and

WHEREAS, Glenbard East is known for its extracurricular programs as well; they have superior band, orchestra, and vocal music programs; the drama program continues to be a leader in high school theater across the State; in 2007, the Mock Trial team won the Illinois State Mock Trial Competition and went on to compete in Dallas, placing 18th overall; and

WHEREAS, In athletics, 22 of the Glenbard East sports teams have placed in the State's top 8, with the Boy's Gymnastics program boasting 3 second place finishes in 1987, 1988, and 1989; Glenbard East student athletes have won 6 individual State championships over the years, and school teams have claimed 61 conference championships as members of the Upstate 8 Conference, the Des Plaines Valley Conference, and the DuPage Valley Conference; and

WHEREAS, Notable Glenbard East graduates include acclaimed novelist Mary Doria Russell (The Sparrow); Fox Sports broadcaster Jill Carlson, and former Chicago Mayor and current clerk of Cook County David Orr; Kurek Ashley, inspirational speaker and writer, has moved to Australia; and Astronaut Dan Tani has viewed the Earth from the international space station, and returned to Glenbard East to share his experience; and

WHEREAS, As everyone, past and present, comes together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Glenbard East High School, may they remember the many accomplishments and achievements from years past and look forward to great things to come; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the students, staff, faculty, administration, and alumni of Glenbard East High School and wish them all continued success for years to come; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Josh Chambers as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
