| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of |
| 4 |
| Clinton as they celebrate the 175th anniversary of their |
| 5 |
| community; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, In 1834, two men from McLean County were returning |
| 7 |
| to their homes after doing business in Decatur when they |
| 8 |
| stopped to rest; Jesse Fell, a Bloomington lawyer and land |
| 9 |
| speculator, and State Representative James Allen rested on a |
| 10 |
| mound of land that today is in the 400 block of North Center |
| 11 |
| Street in Clinton; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, James Allen was an admirer of DeWitt Clinton, then |
| 13 |
| governor of New York and the mind behind the building of the |
| 14 |
| Erie Canal; the two men decided to form a community on the spot |
| 15 |
| and to call it Clinton and to name the county DeWitt; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Clinton was platted in 1835; throughout the years |
| 17 |
| the community grew, and in 1853 the Illinois Central Railroad |
| 18 |
| laid track through the community and brought in new families |
| 19 |
| and business opportunities; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Land was donated for Weldon Springs State Park |
| 21 |
| between 1850 and 1860; the Revere Corporation, Wallace Business |
