HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of Clinton as they celebrate the 175th anniversary of their community; and

WHEREAS, In 1834, two men from McLean County were returning to their homes after doing business in Decatur when they stopped to rest; Jesse Fell, a Bloomington lawyer and land speculator, and State Representative James Allen rested on a mound of land that today is in the 400 block of North Center Street in Clinton; and

WHEREAS, James Allen was an admirer of DeWitt Clinton, then governor of New York and the mind behind the building of the Erie Canal; the two men decided to form a community on the spot and to call it Clinton and to name the county DeWitt; and

WHEREAS, Clinton was platted in 1835; throughout the years the community grew, and in 1853 the Illinois Central Railroad laid track through the community and brought in new families and business opportunities; and

WHEREAS, Land was donated for Weldon Springs State Park between 1850 and 1860; the Revere Corporation, Wallace Business Forms, Todd Manufacturers, and many other businesses formed the Industrial Park, expanding the community; and

WHEREAS, The Clinton Nuclear Power Plant was built in the 1980s, adding Clinton Lake as a recreational area; today the community has a radio station, the YMCA, a library, movie theaters, parks, a hospital, a golf course, and a country club; the Apple and Pork Festival is held annually, drawing visitors to the community; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the citizens of Clinton on this historic event and wish them continued growth and prosperity for years to come; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Clinton Mayor Ed Wollet as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
