HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Robert J. Newton of Creve Coeur, who passed away on August 23, 2010 while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Robert Newton graduated from East Peoria Community High School in 2007; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Robert Newton served his country with pride and distinction as a member of the United States Marine Corps since June of 2007; he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division of the I Marine Expeditionary Force based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California; he was on his 2nd combat deployment at the time of his passing; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Robert Newton was the recipient of numerous decorations for his service, including the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the NATO Medal; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Robert Newton was affectionately known as RJ by his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Robert Newton is survived by his parents, Richard and Denise Newton; and his sister, Breanna; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Robert Newton's patriotism and courage will be remembered fondly by his loving family, his fellow soldiers, and the citizens of our grateful nation; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Lance Corporal Robert J. Newton; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of LCpl. Robert Newton as an expression of our sympathy.
