| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, U.S. Route 62 is the only east-west U.S. route | ||||||
| 3 | that connects Mexico and Canada; U.S. 62 runs from El Paso, | ||||||
| 4 | Texas to Niagara Falls, New York within America's borders; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, A national effort to dedicate U.S. 62 in its | ||||||
| 6 | entirety as the "National Veterans Highway" has been undertaken | ||||||
| 7 | by several veterans groups in numerous states along the route; | ||||||
| 8 | the groups have experienced success in the designation of this | ||||||
| 9 | route in other states; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, U.S. 62 runs through the southern tip of Illinois, | ||||||
| 11 | connecting Missouri to our west with Kentucky to our east; | ||||||
| 12 | although Illinois has the shortest segment of U.S. 62 among the | ||||||
| 13 | 10 states it touches, it is proper to dedicate this piece of | ||||||
| 14 | the road to gain unanimity on the route; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, In honor of the thousands of veterans who so nobly | ||||||
| 16 | serve the United States, it is fitting to dedicate this | ||||||
| 17 | significant route through the United States as the "National | ||||||
| 18 | Veterans Highway" as a humble gesture of appreciation for their | ||||||
| 19 | service; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Our servicemen and women continue to risk and | ||||||
| 21 | sacrifice a great deal, both at home and abroad; this small act | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | would show some part of Illinois' respect and appreciation for | ||||||
| 2 | our veterans; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 4 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 5 | designate the segment of U.S. 62 that touches the southern tip | ||||||
| 6 | of our state as the "National Veterans Highway" and encourage | ||||||
| 7 | the 9 other states along the route to adopt similar measures to | ||||||
| 8 | show support for veterans groups and the men and women serving | ||||||
| 9 | our country today; and be it further
| ||||||
| 10 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
| 11 | is requested to erect, consistent with State and federal | ||||||
| 12 | regulations, signs displaying the ceremonial designation of | ||||||
| 13 | U.S. 62 as the "National Veterans Highway"; and be it further | ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 15 | delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of | ||||||
| 16 | Transportation and the Illinois chapters of the Veterans of | ||||||
| 17 | Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the American Veterans, the | ||||||
| 18 | United Service Organizations, the Disabled American Veterans, | ||||||
| 19 | the Korean War Veterans Association, the Paralyzed Veterans of | ||||||
| 20 | America, and the Vietnam Veterans of America as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 21 | esteem and respect.
