2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
A.L. | ||||||
4 | Lukens of West Frankfort, who passed away on May 25, 2010; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, A.L. Lukens was born on October 14, 1925, in | ||||||
6 | Herrin; his parents were Noel and Golda Lukens; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, In 1944, A.L. Lukens left Herrin High School to | ||||||
8 | join the United States Air Force in order to serve his country; | ||||||
9 | he subsequently returned to join the family business, Bonifield | ||||||
10 | Bros. Truck Line, where he served until he ended his career | ||||||
11 | there as vice president/general manager; he then began a new | ||||||
12 | career in sales with Hulbert Oil, serving there until his | ||||||
13 | retirement as sales manager; after retirement, he continued | ||||||
14 | working at Hulbert Oil as a consultant until he was 78 years | ||||||
15 | old; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, A.L. Lukens was a proud resident of West | ||||||
17 | Frankfort; after moving there in 1950, he quickly became | ||||||
18 | involved in the community through the Jaycees, where he served | ||||||
19 | as president and state vice president, and as a volunteer | ||||||
20 | fireman, where he made many lifelong friends; he served as | ||||||
21 | president of the West Frankfort Park Board and was instrumental | ||||||
22 | in obtaining a grant to pave the roads through the park; he |

1 | served as president of Franklin County Country Club for 5 | ||||||
2 | years; in recent years, he became re-involved in the community | ||||||
3 | as an advocate for bringing Home Rule to West Frankfort and by | ||||||
4 | obtaining funds from the state to beautify the interstate | ||||||
5 | exchange with flowers; he also served as chairman of the Long | ||||||
6 | Range Planning Committee; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, At the age of 45, A.L. Lukens became a student of | ||||||
8 | golf and loved playing the game until he was around 80; as a | ||||||
9 | hobby, he built golf clubs for many people, including his | ||||||
10 | grandsons and his 18-month-old great-grandson, Colton; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, A.L. Lukens lived on Candy Cane Lane and was a | ||||||
12 | founder of the annual Christmas tradition; he and his neighbors | ||||||
13 | brought joy to thousands for the past 25 years by covering his | ||||||
14 | roof and yard with lights; his favorite display was "It's a | ||||||
15 | Small World After All"; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, A.L. Lukens enjoyed traveling to see his kids and | ||||||
17 | grandkids, watching his investments, learning how to use his | ||||||
18 | computer, and taking pride in his beautiful green yard; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, A.L. Lukens was preceded in death by his parents | ||||||
20 | and his mother-in-law, Billie Hestand; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, A.L. Lukens is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his |

1 | daughter, Sally (Tim) Barber; his son, Allen (Luke) Lukens; his | ||||||
2 | sisters and their husbands, Jan and Charlie Blaylock and Kay | ||||||
3 | and Joe Howell; his grandchildren, Brett, Ben, and Adam Barber | ||||||
4 | and Leah and Lindsay Lukens; and his great-grandson, Colton | ||||||
5 | Christian Barber; therefore, be it
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
7 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
8 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of A.L. | ||||||
9 | Lukens; and be it further
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to the family of A.L. Lukens as an expression of our | ||||||
12 | sympathy.
