| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Jesus Gabriel Martinez of Chatham, | ||||||
4 | formerly of Springfield, who passed away on February 21, 2009; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, He was born March 24, 1932, in Havana, Cuba, to | ||||||
7 | Bernandino and Berta Storch Martinez; in 1959 he married Carman | ||||||
8 | O. Casanova in Havana; he graduated from the University of | ||||||
9 | Havana with a degree in accounting and worked for the Cuban | ||||||
10 | government as a CPA prior to it becoming a communist country; | ||||||
11 | and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, After the Cuban revolution in 1962, Jesus was able | ||||||
13 | to immigrate to the United States, where he joined the United | ||||||
14 | States Army; during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was stationed | ||||||
15 | at Fort Jackson, South Carolina; when Carman was able to | ||||||
16 | emigrate from Cuba, they lived in Florida temporarily; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Due to political unrest and unavailability of his | ||||||
18 | educational documents, Jesus chose to attend Indiana State | ||||||
19 | University in Terre Haute where he earned his B.A. in | ||||||
20 | Education; following his graduation, he and his wife moved to | ||||||
21 | Springfield where, at Jefferson Middle School, he began his | ||||||
22 | 30-year Spanish teaching career with Springfield School |

1 | District #186; he also worked for H & R Block; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, During his years of teaching, he lived in | ||||||
3 | Springfield and was a member of the Douglas Avenue Methodist | ||||||
4 | Church as well as El Groupo Latino, for which he played the | ||||||
5 | bongo drums; using his training in the United States Army, he | ||||||
6 | enjoyed fixing things; upon retiring in 1995, he moved to | ||||||
7 | Chatham and became a member of Chatham United Methodist Church; | ||||||
8 | throughout his life, he enjoyed his family, listening to music, | ||||||
9 | dancing, going to the beach with family, and looking forward to | ||||||
10 | cooking his traditional lechon assado (roast pork) every | ||||||
11 | Christmas; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife, Carman; his | ||||||
13 | brother, Raul; and his sister, Edilia; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Jesus Martinez is survived by his daughters, Patty | ||||||
15 | (Bob) Lanser and Ivonne Martinez (husband, Tsen Chung Kang); | ||||||
16 | his grandchildren, Haley, Olivia, Sophie, Jack, Christopher, | ||||||
17 | Jonathan, and Emily to whom he was known as abuelo (grandfather | ||||||
18 | in Spanish); and his sister, Berta; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
21 | his family and friends, the passing of Jesus Martinez; and be | ||||||
22 | it further

2 | presented to the family of Jesus Martinez as a symbol of our | ||||||
3 | sincere sympathy.
