| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Milton J. Smith of Peoria, formerly of | ||||||
4 | Farmer City, who passed away on March 18, 2009; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Milton Smith was born June 9, 1921, in Peoria, the | ||||||
6 | son of Milton Brown and Sadie Predmore Smith; he married Dorcas | ||||||
7 | J. Gelling on September 2, 1945, at the Gelling farm in Monica, | ||||||
8 | and they honeymooned together at Wrigley Field watching the | ||||||
9 | Chicago Cubs; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, He served in the United States Marine Corps during | ||||||
11 | World War II, serving in the Southwest Pacific Theater; upon | ||||||
12 | his return from the war, Milton farmed in Monica and was | ||||||
13 | fertilizer manager for Stark Agriculture; he later moved to | ||||||
14 | Farmer City, where he worked as a fertilizer manager in Harris | ||||||
15 | and Broadwell; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, He was a past member and commander of the | ||||||
17 | Princeville American Legion Post and a current member of the | ||||||
18 | DeLand American Legion; he was a member and past worshipful | ||||||
19 | master of the DeLand Masonic Lodge 812, AF&AM, and former | ||||||
20 | worshipful master of the Princeville Lodge 360, AF&AM; he also | ||||||
21 | belonged to the Illinois Rabbit Breeders Association and the | ||||||
22 | Woodlawn Country Club in Farmer City; and |

1 | WHEREAS, He was a DeWitt County Township supervisor and was | ||||||
2 | a basketball referee in his early years, as well as a 4-H | ||||||
3 | leader; he and his wife were members of the United Methodist | ||||||
4 | Church of Farmer City, and they delivered Peace Meals through | ||||||
5 | the Farmer City Senior Citizens Center; he was a diehard | ||||||
6 | Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed watching University of Illinois | ||||||
7 | basketball games, and loved to bowl; he also enjoyed growing | ||||||
8 | award-winning roses; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorcas; his | ||||||
10 | parents; and his granddaughter, Heather Smith; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, He is survived by his son, Milton Curphy (Kathryn) | ||||||
12 | Smith; his daughters, Bonnie Lee (Ron) Riffey, Jurretta Sue | ||||||
13 | (Glenn) Huffman, Kimberly Rae (Douglas) Phillips, and Bernice | ||||||
14 | Irene (Banyong) Bunyarattaphantu; 15 grandchildren; 14 | ||||||
15 | great-grandchildren; his brother, Arthur Gene (Joyce) Smith; | ||||||
16 | and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
19 | his family and friends, the passing of Milton Smith; and be it | ||||||
20 | further

21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
