2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
John Blakey, who passed away on April 1, | ||||||
4 | 2009; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Blakey was born on March 18, 1940 in Brent, | ||||||
6 | Alabama; he was the son of George and Queenie Blakey; he | ||||||
7 | married Evonne Alexander on June 29, 1963; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, In 1945, John Blakey and his family moved to | ||||||
9 | Chicago in search of better employment and educational | ||||||
10 | opportunities; he attended and graduated from St. Charles | ||||||
11 | Borromeo Elementary and St. Philip High School; he earned his | ||||||
12 | bachelor's degree from DePaul University in 1962 and his | ||||||
13 | Master's of Business Administration from the University of | ||||||
14 | Chicago; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, John Blakey was employed in numerous positions in | ||||||
16 | the private and public sectors; he worked for the Social | ||||||
17 | Security Administration and the Veterans Administration; he | ||||||
18 | served as vice president of MICA, Inc., A.G. Becker and Co., | ||||||
19 | and Becker Securities Corp.; he was president of his own | ||||||
20 | consulting firm, Blakey Services, Inc., for four years; he | ||||||
21 | worked as a part-time adjunct professor at Chicago State | ||||||
22 | university and Governors State University; after completing |

1 | School Business Management training at Northern Illinois | ||||||
2 | University, he served as chief school business official for | ||||||
3 | Harvey School District 152, North Chicago Unit School District | ||||||
4 | 187, and Bremen High School District 228, from which he retired | ||||||
5 | in 2006; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Following his retirement, John Blakey served as | ||||||
7 | Interim Director of Business Operations for Thornton High | ||||||
8 | School District 205 from 2006 to 2008 and at Riverdale School | ||||||
9 | District 133 from 2008 until his passing; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, John Blakey was a member of Toastmasters, where he | ||||||
11 | was widely regarded as an eloquent public speaker, and was a | ||||||
12 | charter member of the Glenwood/Thornton Toastmasters; he | ||||||
13 | served as a member of the Brookwood District 167 Board of | ||||||
14 | Education from 1983 until his passing, serving as secretary, | ||||||
15 | vice president, and president during his tenure; he was a | ||||||
16 | chairperson of the Reclaim A Youth (RAY) of Illinois Advisory | ||||||
17 | Board and served on the RAY Scholarship and College Orientation | ||||||
18 | Committee; he was also a member of the Illinois Association of | ||||||
19 | School Business Officials, the Homewood Rotary, and the | ||||||
20 | Glenwood Lions Club; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, John Blakey was preceded in death by his father | ||||||
22 | and his brothers, Jeff (Valeria) and George Jr.; and |

1 | WHEREAS, John Blakey is survived by his loving and devoted | ||||||
2 | wife, Evonne; his son, Randall (Sonya); his daughter, Ricia | ||||||
3 | (Trenton) Taylor; his grandchildren, Noel, Destinee, Justice, | ||||||
4 | and Zion; his mother; his brother, James (Monica); his | ||||||
5 | mother-in-law, Christine Alexander; his sister-in-law, Deborah | ||||||
6 | (Jerry); and his many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, | ||||||
7 | great-nephews, and friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
10 | his family and friends, the passing of John Blakey; and be it | ||||||
11 | further

12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to the family of John Blakey as an expression of our | ||||||
14 | sympathy.
