SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are pleased to
3 support the survivors of the 1921 Tulsa, Oklahoma race riot;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, Eighty years ago, the Greenwood Community in
6 Tulsa, Oklahoma was bombed, burned, looted, and destroyed in
7 less than 10 hours; several thousand people were displaced
8 overnight and an estimated 300-3,000 persons were killed; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Before his death, John Hope Franklin joined others
10 in urging Congress to make it possible for the survivors of the
11 Tulsa massacre to receive restitution; his father was among the
12 displaced; and
 
13     WHEREAS, A benefit to support the survivors of this tragic
14 event will be held in Chicago on April 28, 2009; and
 
15     WHEREAS, The contributions raised at this event will
16 provide significant help to the remaining survivors; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Harvard Professor Dr. Charles Ogletree will
18 provide a historic background while three survivors, ranging
19 from 91-105 years of age will give their personal recollections
20 of what transpired on that tragic night in Tulsa's Greenwood

1 area once known as the Black Wall Street; therefore, be it
 
2     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
3 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we offer continued
4 support to the survivors of this tragic event; and be it
5 further
 
6     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
7 presented to the survivors of the 1921 Tulsa, Oklahoma race
8 riot as a symbol of our support.
