| SENATE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 |
| learn of the death of
John L. Holmes of Bethalto, who passed |
| 4 |
| away on April 27, 2009; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, John Holmes was born on April 14, 1926, in Witt; |
| 6 |
| he was the son of Paul and Mary (Bradley) Holmes; he married |
| 7 |
| the former Anna Kisak on December 11, 1948 in Witt; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, John Holmes served his country in the United |
| 9 |
| States Army during World War II; during the war, he was |
| 10 |
| attached to the Adjutant General's Staff in Fort Knox, |
| 11 |
| Kentucky; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, John Holmes retired from Amoco Oil Company in 1982 |
| 13 |
| after 38 years of dedicated service; he served as a volunteer |
| 14 |
| fireman for the Village of Bethalto for 45 years, serving as |
| 15 |
| fire chief for nine of those years; he was the first EMT for |
| 16 |
| the fire department and the village; he also served two terms |
| 17 |
| on the Bethalto Village Board; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, John Holmes enjoyed high school sports and was an |
| 19 |
| avid St. Louis Cardinals fan; he also loved traveling to Las |
| 20 |
| Vegas; and
|
|
|

| WHEREAS, John Holmes was a charter member of Our Lady Queen |
| 2 |
| of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto and was instrumental in |
| 3 |
| the foundation of Our Lady Queen of Peace School; he was a |
| 4 |
| lifetime member of the Bethalto Knights of Columbus, where he |
| 5 |
| was a 4th Degree Knight with the 4th Degree Assembly Pere |
| 6 |
| Marquette; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, John Holmes was preceded in death by his parents; |
| 8 |
| his sisters, Eulalia Lehnen, Catherine Landreth, and Margaret |
| 9 |
| Deluka; his brothers, Bradley Holmes and Paul Holmes; and his |
| 10 |
| son-in-law, Larry Matheny; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, John Holmes is survived by his wife; his children |
| 12 |
| and their spouses, Cynthia Matheny, Susan Holmes-Roper, and |
| 13 |
| Michael and Martina Holmes; his grandchildren and their |
| 14 |
| spouses, Johnathan and Tonya Matheny, Franklin and Amber |
| 15 |
| Matheny, Catherine and David Harris, Anna Roper, Emily Holmes, |
| 16 |
| and Rachel Holmes; his great-grandchild, Johnathan D. Matheny; |
| 17 |
| and his numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
|
| 18 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL |
| 19 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
| 20 |
| his family and friends, the passing of John L. Holmes; and be |
| 21 |
