SENATE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to 
3
learn of the death of Centreville Police Lieutenant Gregory 
4
Jonas of Centreville, who was killed in the line of duty on 
5
June 2, 2009; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, He was born in Centreville, formerly Fireworks 
7
Station, on June 12, 1949, to Roy Mathews and Vivian Whigham; 
8
he attended East St. Louis Senior High School from 1963 to 
9
1967; after high school he attended Texas Tech University in 
10
Tyler, Texas from 1968 to 1972; and

 
11
    WHEREAS, He joined the Alorton Police Department in 1976, 
12
where he worked for eight years; in 1995 Greg joined the 
13
Centreville Police Department; in 2004 he was promoted to the 
14
position of Lieutenant; he married Ms. Viola Madlock in 2003; 
15
and

 
16
    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his sister, Elise 
17
Hughs; and

    WHEREAS, Lieutenant Gregory Jonas leaves to cherish his 
19
memory, his dear and loving wife of six years, Viola Jonas; his 
20
loving mother, Ms. Vivian Whigham; his two sons, Jamal Jonas 
21
and Antonio McNamee; his four daughters, Kalidah (Juan) Jonas

Carraway, Joni McNamee, Jessica McNamee, and Annette McNamee; 
2
his two special grandchildren, Tamondja Smith and Antonio 
3
Harris; his 10 beautiful grandchildren and a host of other 
4
relatives and friends; his best friend, Sgt. Barry Foster; the 
5
Centreville police department; and the entire community of 
6
Centreville; therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL 
8
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 
9
his family, friends, and a grateful community, the passing of 
10
Centreville Police Lieutenant Gregory Jonas; and be it further

 
11
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
12
presented to the family of Centreville Police Lieutenant 
13
Gregory Jonas as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
