2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Robert Hambric of Chicago, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on August 21, 2009; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Bob Hambric grew up on the South Side of Chicago; | ||||||
6 | he played basketball at Parker (now Robeson) High School, where | ||||||
7 | he graduated in 1958; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Bob Hambric went on to LeMoyne-Owen College in | ||||||
9 | Memphis, Tennessee, where he was the captain of the basketball | ||||||
10 | team and an honors student; he earned his degree in elementary | ||||||
11 | education from the school in 1964; he later earned dual | ||||||
12 | master's degrees in guidance counseling and urban studies from | ||||||
13 | Northeastern University; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Bob Hambric was employed at Herny Horner Homes and | ||||||
15 | coached at a YMCA before taking over the freshman-sophomore | ||||||
16 | teams at Simeon in 1974, presiding over a string of winning | ||||||
17 | squads; after becoming Simeon's varsity coach in 1980, he | ||||||
18 | continued his string of victories until his retirement in 2004; | ||||||
19 | and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure as Simeon's coach, Bob | ||||||
21 | Hambric produced disciplined teams whose controlled offensive |

| |||||||
1 | schemes broke with the city's tradition of breakneck, | ||||||
2 | playground-style play and fundamentally sound players; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, During his brilliant 24-year career, Bob Hambric | ||||||
4 | coached Simeon to a phenomenal 551-145 record and produced a | ||||||
5 | State championship team in 1984; he won 20 or more games in 19 | ||||||
6 | of his first 20 seasons; in 1998, he was inducted into the | ||||||
7 | Illinois Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Bob Hambric taught his players the importance of | ||||||
9 | assists - on and off the court - through strong values which | ||||||
10 | encouraged global citizenship; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Bob Hambric utilized a strict discipline combined | ||||||
12 | with an ear of compassion for his players in order to share an | ||||||
13 | honest assessment of Chicago youth; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Bob Hambric is survived by his son, Robert M. | ||||||
15 | Hambric Jr.; his daughter, Robyn Hambric; his brother, Arthur; | ||||||
16 | his 3 nieces; and his long-time companion, Stacy Bonner; | ||||||
17 | therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
20 | his family and friends, the passing of Robert Hambric; and be | ||||||
21 | it further
