2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
Mildred "Mim" D. Sullivan, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on August 4, 2009; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan was born in Chicago in 1921; her | ||||||
6 | parents were Dan and Mildred Donovan; she married Cornelius | ||||||
7 | (Neil) Sullivan in 1942; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan was raised in the South Shore | ||||||
9 | community of Chicago and attended Saint Philip Neri School and | ||||||
10 | Saint Xavier High School; she went on to graduate with honors | ||||||
11 | from Wellesley College in June of 1942; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Following the unfortunate passing of her husband | ||||||
13 | in 1964, Mildred Sullivan went to work to support her 7 | ||||||
14 | children; she began her career as a grammar school teacher in | ||||||
15 | Evanston, then moved on to Sacred Heart School in Winnetka; in | ||||||
16 | 1967, she moved to Loyola Academy, starting as an | ||||||
17 | Administrative Assistant to the Rev. John Bell, S.J., the | ||||||
18 | academy's principal; in 1969, she earned her Master of | ||||||
19 | Education degree with a concentration in guidance and | ||||||
20 | counseling from Loyola University; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan was a pioneer in the field of |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | guidance and college counseling for high school students; in | ||||||
2 | 1969, she was named Director of the Guidance Program at Loyola | ||||||
3 | Academy in Wilmette, serving in that capacity until her | ||||||
4 | retirement in 1994; her innovative ideas, which included the | ||||||
5 | development of the Academy's O'Shaughnessy program for | ||||||
6 | learning development, served as models for many Jesuit high | ||||||
7 | schools throughout the nation; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan was a member of numerous academic | ||||||
9 | organizations; she was an Illinois delegate to the National | ||||||
10 | Association of College Admission Counselors; she served a | ||||||
11 | 3-year term as a board member on the Midwest Regional Assembly | ||||||
12 | of the College Board; she was a member of the Illinois | ||||||
13 | Association of College Admission Counselors and served as its | ||||||
14 | president for 2 years; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan served as Secretary and | ||||||
16 | President of the St. Francis Xavier School Board; she was a | ||||||
17 | member of the St. Francis Xavier Ministry of Care; she also | ||||||
18 | participated on the advisory board of Parents Against Drug and | ||||||
19 | Alcohol Abuse (PADAA); and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan enjoyed reading and playing | ||||||
21 | bridge; and | ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan was preceded in death by her |

1 | parents and her husband; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Mildred Sullivan is survived by her brother, Dr. | ||||||
3 | William Donovan; her children, Cornelius, Jr. (Susan), Dr. | ||||||
4 | Daniel (Nancy), Kenneth (Mary), Anne (Paul White), John | ||||||
5 | (Cindy), William (Suzanne), and Jane (Luc Tabourot); 21 | ||||||
6 | grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and | ||||||
7 | nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
10 | her family and friends, the passing of Mildred "Mim" D. | ||||||
11 | Sullivan; and be it further
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to the family of Mildred Sullivan as an expression of | ||||||
14 | our sympathy.
