SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Quillen Leigh Fox of Montgomery, who
4 passed away on September 19, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Quillen Fox was born in Randolph, Nebraska in
6 1918; he was the son of Robert and Anna Fox; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Quillen Fox graduated from Nebraska State
8 Teachers College (now Wayne State College) and received his
9 master's degree from the University of Illinois; and
 
10     WHEREAS, In 1942, Quillen Fox joined the United States
11 Navy; he then attended Northwestern University Midshipman
12 School to receive training to serve as a naval officer in World
13 War II; following his training, he served aboard the U.S.S.
14 Mullany and received the Bronze Star after his ship was
15 attacked by a Japanese plane during the campaign at Okinawa in
16 April of 1945; after leaving active naval service in 1947, he
17 continued his naval service as a member of the Naval Reserve
18 until his retirement in 1983, when he retired with the rank of
19 Lieutenant Commander; and
 
20     WHEREAS, After World War II, Quillen Fox joined Investors
21 Diversified Services; in 1973, he switched careers to become a

1 teacher and coach on the south side of Chicago; during his
2 career, he took part in an innovative program to prepare
3 overage underachievers to finish high school; his students
4 could always rely on Mr. Fox for clean uniforms, a ride to
5 games, and a meal from McDonald's after the game; Mr. Fox
6 served faithfully for 20 years until his retirement from
7 teaching in 1993; and
 
8     WHEREAS, After his retirement, Quillen Fox became active in
9 volunteer work; he devoted endless hours to Dreyer Clinic,
10 Meals on Wheels, the Special Olympics, and the Kiwanis Club,
11 where he was named Kiwanian of the Year in 2001; he served the
12 congregation of Wesley Methodist Church faithfully as a Sunday
13 School teacher and member of the Finance Committee; he was
14 active in the Navy League and promoted Pearl Harbor Remembrance
15 events; he also attended reunions of classmates from Wayne
16 State College, classmates from Northwestern Midshipman School,
17 and his shipmates from the U.S.S. Mullany; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Quillen Fox was a Golden Gloves Champion and an
19 all-around sports enthusiast; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Quillen Fox is survived by his wife of 64 years,
21 Phyllis Kendall Fox; his daughters, Linda (Larry), Cindy
22 Anderton (Steve), and Carol San Roman (Phil); and his 6
23 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
3 his family and friends, the passing of Quillen Leigh Fox; and
4 be it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to the family of Quillen Fox as an expression of our
7 sympathy.
