| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 |
| learn of the death of
Sheldon J. Segal; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Sheldon Segal was a pioneer in the field of |
5 |
| contraceptives; he was the leader of the team that developed |
6 |
| the contraceptive implant Norplant and several other |
7 |
| birth-control devices used by millions of women worldwide; he |
8 |
| also helped create the Mirena intrauterine device, |
9 |
| copper-bearing IUDs, and contraceptive vaginal rings; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, Sheldon Segal was a strong believer in a woman's |
11 |
| right to control her reproduction; he spent years persuading |
12 |
| the Chinese government to switch from ill-fitting steel IUDs to |
13 |
| flexible copper-bearing IUDs, a key improvement that also |
14 |
| reduced the demand for abortions in China; he also toured |
15 |
| numerous contraceptive clinics in Bangladesh during the 1970s |
16 |
| and worked with the Bangladeshi government to try to improve |
17 |
| the quality of IUD delivery; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Sheldon Segal served as an advisor to numerous |
19 |
| governmental and non-governmental organizations, including the |
20 |
| Population Council, the United States Congress, the World |
21 |
| Health Organization, the U.N. Population Fund, the World Bank, |
22 |
| and the European Parliament; therefore, be it
