| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Mircea Sabau, who passed away on June 15, | ||||||
| 4 | 2009; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Mircea Sabau was born on August 24, 1934, in | ||||||
| 6 | Turda, Romania; as a child, he studied in Turda before moving | ||||||
| 7 | to Bucharest to continue his studies at the University C.I. | ||||||
| 8 | Parhon's Faculty of Physics from 1952 to 1957; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, After finishing his studies in 1957, Mircea Sabau | ||||||
| 10 | worked at the Nuclear Reactor Division of the Institute of | ||||||
| 11 | Atomic Physics in Bucharest for 18 years; in 1970, he earned | ||||||
| 12 | his doctorate in high energy physics; he then worked at the | ||||||
| 13 | Joint Institute of Nuclear Physics at Dubna in the former | ||||||
| 14 | Soviet Union; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, No longer able to stand the harsh controls of the | ||||||
| 16 | Communist government in Romania, Mircea Sabau and his family | ||||||
| 17 | defected to the West in 1975; after working for a year at the | ||||||
| 18 | Institute of Nuclear Research in Karlsruhe, Germany, he moved | ||||||
| 19 | to the United States and began working for the Argonne National | ||||||
| 20 | Laboratory; after his funding at Argonne began to diminish, he | ||||||
| 21 | decided to study a new field; after taking the Board | ||||||
| 22 | Examinations in Medical Physics, he became a Professor of | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | Medical Physics at the University of Chicago, where he worked | ||||||
| 2 | for 18 years; during that time, he was also placed in charge of | ||||||
| 3 | calibrating the University Hospital's complex new equipment; | ||||||
| 4 | he then worked at the Baylor Medical Center at the University | ||||||
| 5 | of Dallas as a Professor of Medical Physics for 4 years, | ||||||
| 6 | concurrently serving as the head of the Laboratory of | ||||||
| 7 | Diagnostic and Treatment Equipment; in 1998, he and his wife | ||||||
| 8 | retired in order to devote himself fully to increasing Romanian | ||||||
| 9 | cultural awareness in the Western world; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Mircea Sabau published over 150 scientific papers | ||||||
| 11 | in peer-reviewed journals; he also presented over 50 papers at | ||||||
| 12 | various international conferences and congresses; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Mircea Sabau was a member of numerous civic and | ||||||
| 14 | cultural organizations; he was a member of the | ||||||
| 15 | American-Romanian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Rocky | ||||||
| 16 | Mountain Modern Language Association, and the Bureau of the | ||||||
| 17 | Director and representative of the Romanian World Council; he | ||||||
| 18 | also served as a representative of a non-governmental | ||||||
| 19 | organization from Romania at the United Nations; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Mircea Sabau will be remembered fondly by all and | ||||||
| 21 | knew and loved him as an honest and caring man whose integrity | ||||||
| 22 | and dignity were unmatched; therefore, be it
| ||||||

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 3 | his family and friends, the passing of Mircea Sabau; and be it | ||||||
| 4 | further
| ||||||
| 5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 6 | presented to the family of Mircea Sabau as an expression of our | ||||||
| 7 | sympathy.
