SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Eathel Johnson; and

WHEREAS, Eathel Johnson was born on December 14, 1920, in Shelby, Mississippi; her parents were the late Tommie and Corrine Johnson; she was raised by her great-grandparents, George and Elizabeth Henry; she became a mother as a young woman, then married Allen Spears; she later married L.C. Melton; and

WHEREAS, Eathel Johnson confessed to Christ in 1932 at the age of 12; she then became a member of Magnolia Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Eathel Johnson belonged to numerous churches; she eventually found a home at the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Winstonville, Mississippi, where she was an active member for 50 years and served on the Usher and Mothers Boards; after moving to Chicago, she joined the Greater New Birth Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder Timothy Dotson; and

WHEREAS, Eathel Johnson is survived by her sons, Lamar (Dessie) Johnson, Roy (Doris) Melton, and Donell (Gayle) Melton; her stepson, Authur L. (Barbara) Melton; her daughters, Freda (Ruben) Brown, Julia and Dorothy Spears, Ida (Ward) Walker, Derotha Melton, Vercy (Lee) Melton Jones, Ella (Marion) Bryant, and Texas and Paulette Melton; her brother, Robert Franklin (Eloise); her sister-in-law, Lillie Davis; her special cousin/sister, Martha Bulter; her 43 grandchildren; her 48 great-grandchildren; her 6 great-great-grandchildren; and her many other family members and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Eathel Johnson; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Eathel Johnson as an expression of our sympathy.
