| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of James E. Peeples of Peoria, who passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on March 18, 2010; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, He was born December 20, 1913, in Buena Vista, | ||||||
| 6 | Georgia, to Greely and Zula (Jones) Peeples; he married Mary | ||||||
| 7 | Frances on August 8, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, He worked for the city of Peoria, retiring in 1983 | ||||||
| 9 | as director of human relations in the Department of Human | ||||||
| 10 | Resources; he also retired after 53 years of service as owner | ||||||
| 11 | and operator of the Drapery House in Peoria; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, As a civil rights leader for many years, he was | ||||||
| 13 | inducted into the Peoria African-American Hall of Fame and | ||||||
| 14 | served on numerous committees, including the NAACP, Peoria City | ||||||
| 15 | Council, Tri-County Urban League, Agency on Aging, American | ||||||
| 16 | Civil Liberties Union, and many more; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, He had 61 years of dedicated service to the Alpha | ||||||
| 18 | Phi Alpha Fraternity and received many awards for his service | ||||||
| 19 | in the Peoria community, including the Dr. Martin Luther King | ||||||
| 20 | Award, the Governor's Award for Unique Achievement, an Award | ||||||
| 21 | for the Chairman of the Peoria Economic Association, the Bob | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | Horan Community Service Award, the Pope John Paul Award, the | ||||||
| 2 | Sam Belfer Civil Libertarian Award, the Tri-County Urban League | ||||||
| 3 | Service and Recognition Award, and the 2000 Alpha Phi Alpha Man | ||||||
| 4 | of the Year Award; he received many more awards for his work in | ||||||
| 5 | the community and his continued effort to improve race | ||||||
| 6 | relations; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, He was an active member of the Ward Chapel AME | ||||||
| 8 | Church; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife | ||||||
| 10 | of 65 years; his son, Steven; his daughter, Paula Frances; his | ||||||
| 11 | brothers, Horace, Robert, Arvora and Grady; and his sisters, | ||||||
| 12 | Willa Mae Johnson and Ocie Peeples; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, James Peeples is survived by his seven daughters, | ||||||
| 14 | Berdean (Tony) Simmons, Susan Slaughter, Mary Anne (Steven) | ||||||
| 15 | Fuller, Theresa (Tommy) Randolph, Rose Peeples, Judy (Tim) | ||||||
| 16 | Sturdivant, and Kayla Johnson; his five sons, James Jr., David, | ||||||
| 17 | Martin, Lester (Peggy) Peeples, and John Peeples; his 22 | ||||||
| 18 | grandchildren; and his 17 great-grandchildren; therefore, be | ||||||
| 19 | it

| 20 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 21 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 22 | his family and friends, the passing of James Peeples; and be it | ||||||
