| SENATE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 |
| learn of the death of
Robert J. Stumm of New Orleans, |
4 |
| Louisiana, formerly of Bonita Springs, Florida and Aurora, |
5 |
| Illinois, who passed away on May 4, 2010; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Robert Stumm was the son of Bernard J. and Jane |
7 |
| Stumm; he was raised in Aurora; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Robert Stumm graduated from West Aurora High |
9 |
| School in 1941 and attended Dartmouth College; he then joined |
10 |
| the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve until his honorable discharge; he |
11 |
| graduated from University of Illinois in 1946; and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, Robert Stumm met Dolores Ruddy when they were both |
13 |
| teenagers; the couple married in 1947 and settled in Aurora, |
14 |
| where they raised their three sons, David, Hans, and Rob; in |
15 |
| 1992, the couple left Aurora and moved to Bonita Springs, |
16 |
| Florida; in 2005, they moved to Lambeth House in New Orleans |
17 |
| just in time for Hurricane Katrina; they were the first |
18 |
| evacuees to leave Lambeth House and spent the fall in Chicago |
19 |
| with their son, David, at his home; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, Robert Stumm made a career selling life insurance |
21 |
| to his friends and acquaintances; he also dabbled in politics |
|
|

| and was Chairman of the Kane County Board of Supervisors during |
2 |
| the 1960s; he and his friend, D.V. McWethy, formed McWethy |
3 |
| Brothers Insurance, which was sold to Corroon & Black (now |
4 |
| Willis) in 1980; shortly afterwards, he retired and began a |
5 |
| career as a model, appearing in many advertisements in |
6 |
| magazines such as Time, Newsweek, AARP, and Modern Maturity; he |
7 |
| also appeared in videos for hospitals and Snapper lawnmowers; |
8 |
| and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Robert Stumm was a member and President of the |
10 |
| Aurora Country Club; he was Director of the Home Savings and |
11 |
| Loan in Aurora; he was a life member of the Elks Club, Moose |
12 |
| Club, Exchange Club, and Union League Club of Chicago; while in |
13 |
| New Orleans, he was the oldest member to ever be initiated into |
14 |
| The Recess Club; and |
15 |
| WHEREAS, Robert Stumm enjoyed many sports and quit them |
16 |
| all; he enjoyed basketball, tennis, hunting, fishing, |
17 |
| bicycling, and handball for 50 years; his last bowling match |
18 |
| ended memorably, with the ball, shoes, and bag being thrown |
19 |
| into the Fox River; he took up flying at age 50 and earned a |
20 |
| Private Certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings; |
21 |
| he enjoyed many flights with his wife in his Twin Comanche, |
22 |
| because none of his friends would fly with him; and
|
23 |
| WHEREAS, Robert Stumm is survived by his wife, Dolores; his |
|

| sister, Eloise Brush; his sons, David (Kathy), Hans |
2 |
| (Priscilla), and Rob (Kit); his grandchildren, Jenny Knapp, |
3 |
| Brian, David, Jim, and Jack Stumm, Alexandra Pogorelec, Amanda |
4 |
| Stumm, and Courtney, Celie, and Sibyl Stumm; and his 16 |
5 |
| great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL |
7 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
8 |
| his family and friends, the passing of Robert J. Stumm; and be |
9 |
| it further
|
10 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
11 |
| presented to the family of Robert Stumm as an expression of our |
12 |
| sympathy.
