| SENATE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 |
| learn of the death of Sister Betty Drew of San Diego, |
4 |
| California, formerly of Waukegan, who passed away on April 13, |
5 |
| 2010; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, She was born in Waukegan on July 12, 1934; she |
7 |
| graduated from Immaculate Conception School and Holy Child High |
8 |
| School before attending the College of St. Teresa, Winona, |
9 |
| Minnesota; she entered the Society of the Holy Child Jesus |
10 |
| (S.H.C.J.) in 1953; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, For 23 years she taught in parochial schools in |
12 |
| Waukegan, Chicago, and Philadelphia dioceses and in New York |
13 |
| City; in 1979, her compassion for the poor, especially women |
14 |
| and children, led her to Tijuana, Mexico, where she helped |
15 |
| women of the Colonia Victoria to develop cottage industries and |
16 |
| ministered to the social and spiritual needs of the Latino |
17 |
| community; from 1985 to 1993 she relocated to Los Angeles to |
18 |
| work with MEND (Meeting Each Need with Dignity) teaching |
19 |
| English as a Second Language and later to San Fernando as a |
20 |
| pastoral assistant founding support groups; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, As a resident of Ocean Beach for the past 11 |
22 |
| years, Sister Betty provided pro bono paralegal services at |
|
|
|

| Casa Cornelia Law Center in San Diego; as she volunteered for |
2 |
| their Domestic Violence Program, she was beloved by both |
3 |
| clients and colleagues for her commitment, compassion, |
4 |
| diligence, and independent spirit; and |
5 |
| WHEREAS, Sister Betty received a Bachelor of Arts degree in |
6 |
| History from Mundelein College, Chicago, a Masters of Arts |
7 |
| degree in Reading Specialization from Cardinal Stritch |
8 |
| College, Milwaukee, as well as post graduate studies, Spanish |
9 |
| Language courses, and certifications at DePaul and Fordham |
10 |
| Universities, St. Mary's College, Los Angeles, and in the |
11 |
| Dominican Republic and Texas; she was a Certified |
12 |
| Representative of the Board of Immigration Appeals; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and |
14 |
| Anne Drew; her brother, the late Mayor Dan Drew; and her |
15 |
| brother-in-law, Peter Jula; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, Sister Betty Drew is survived by her sisters, |
17 |
| Marianna Jula, Donna (Claude) Incaudo, Katie (Ron), and her |
18 |
| sister-in-law, Peggy Drew; she was a loving aunt, niece, and |
19 |
| cousin to generations of the Drews and Kubaitis'; therefore, be |
20 |
