| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Roman Miller of Waukegan, who passed away |
| 4 | | on August 6, 2010; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Roman Miller was born in 1917 to Nicholas and |
| 6 | | Margaret (Westrup) Miller in Eden Valley, Minnesota, and spent |
| 7 | | his formative years in Millerville, Minnesota; in 1942, he |
| 8 | | married Cresy Wilken; from 1942 to 1946, he served as a |
| 9 | | Communications Specialist with the United States Army Air Force |
| 10 | | Headquarters, including two years in New Guinea and the |
| 11 | | Philippines; after teaching in Minnesota for several years, |
| 12 | | Roman moved with his family in 1955 to Waukegan to accept a |
| 13 | | position as a Business Education teacher at Waukegan Township |
| 14 | | High School; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Roman Miller spent his first 12 years as an |
| 16 | | educator working as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor, |
| 17 | | the Director of Guidance for Waukegan East High School, and the |
| 18 | | Director of Data Processing and spent his last 14 years, prior |
| 19 | | to retirement in 1981, serving as an Associate Superintendent |
| 20 | | for Business Affairs for the Waukegan Unit School District; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, He received an undergraduate degree in Business |
| 22 | | Education from St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University and |
|

| 1 | | received advanced degrees from the University of Minnesota and |
| 2 | | Northwestern University; he was active in civic and community |
| 3 | | affairs at both the local and State level; he served as |
| 4 | | President of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, as a |
| 5 | | Trustee of the Illinois Teachers Retirement System, as |
| 6 | | Secretary of the Waukegan Civil Service Commission, as a Board |
| 7 | | member of Junior Achievement, as a Charter member and President |
| 8 | | of Waukegan Crime Stoppers, as Chairman of a United Way |
| 9 | | Allocations Committee, as President of the Waukegan Library |
| 10 | | Foundation, as Coordinator and Instructor in the Lake County |
| 11 | | AARP Tax-Aide Program, as Treasurer of the Lake County Retired |
| 12 | | Teachers Association, and as a member of the Waukegan Public |
| 13 | | School Board; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, He was Secretary-Treasurer of the Waukegan |
| 15 | | Township Senior Citizens Service Committee and was |
| 16 | | instrumental in the construction of Park Place; he served over |
| 17 | | 30 years as a Credit Union Director and was involved in |
| 18 | | Consumers Credit Union; he received many awards, including a |
| 19 | | National AARP award for community service; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Roman Miller was preceded in death by his beloved |
| 21 | | wife of 64 years, Cresy, with whom he created a marriage built |
| 22 | | on love and respect; by his parents; his brothers, John and |
| 23 | | Philip; and his sister, Florence; and
|
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Roman Miller is survived by his daughter, Penny |
| 2 | | Miller and her partner, Richard Hershman; his sons, Michael |
| 3 | | Miller and his wife, Patricia Berry, and Jonathan Miller and |
| 4 | | his wife, Julie Rand; his grandchildren, Stacy Mahoney and her |
| 5 | | husband, Tim Mahoney, Nicole Miller and her husband, Ed |
| 6 | | Stevenson, Katharine (Kevin) Mershon, Matthew Pflaum, Kevin |
| 7 | | Pflaum, and Brian Pflaum; his great-grandchildren, Lily, |
| 8 | | Susie, and Margee Mahoney, Brendon, Alex, Nate, and Carly |
| 9 | | Stevenson, and many nieces and nephews; he is also survived by |
| 10 | | his sisters, Mary Roers, Elaine Adamek, and Dorine Lehn; his |
| 11 | | brother, Joseph; his sisters-in-law, Kathleen Miller and |
| 12 | | Maxine Wilken, and by his brother-in-law and college roommate, |
| 13 | | Claude (Delores) Wilken; therefore, be it
|
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL |
| 15 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
| 16 | | his family and friends, the passing of Roman Miller; and be it |
| 17 | | further
|
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 19 | | presented to the family of Roman Miller as a symbol of our |
| 20 | | sincere sympathy.
