2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Paul B. Snider of Peoria, who passed away | ||||||
4 | on November 19, 2010; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, He was born on October 17, 1918, in Cleveland, | ||||||
6 | Ohio, to Bernard and Mary Haeckle Snider; he married June | ||||||
7 | Milner on June 8, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; he was a World | ||||||
8 | War II veteran of the United States Army Signal Corps from | ||||||
9 | 1942-46, he served in Washington, D.C., and then established | ||||||
10 | and was in charge of United States Army Radiophoto stations in | ||||||
11 | England, France, and Germany; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Before joining Bradley University in 1955, he | ||||||
13 | taught at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and the | ||||||
14 | University of Oregon in Eugene; at Bradley, he served as | ||||||
15 | chairman of the journalism department from 1956 to 1970, and | ||||||
16 | was on leave during 1967 to serve as Fulbright Professor at | ||||||
17 | Kabul University, Afghanistan; while in Afghanistan, he was an | ||||||
18 | accredited foreign correspondent for Time-Life; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, He resigned from Bradley in 1970 to be the | ||||||
20 | founding chairman of the department of mass communications at | ||||||
21 | the American University of Beirut, Lebanon; he also lectured in | ||||||
22 | Iran and Cyprus; he returned to Bradley in 1972, as professor |

1 | of journalism; in 1976, he received Bradley's Putnam Award for | ||||||
2 | Excellence in Teaching; on his retirement in 1985, Bradley's | ||||||
3 | Board of Trustees appointed him Emeritus Professor of | ||||||
4 | Communication; and | ||||||
5 | |||||||
6 | WHEREAS, His education included a B.J. from the University | ||||||
7 | of Missouri-Columbia; an M.A. from the University of | ||||||
8 | Oregon-Eugene; and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, Iowa | ||||||
9 | City; he was a retired member of the Society of Professional | ||||||
10 | Journalists, Association for Education in Journalism, Phi | ||||||
11 | Kappa Phi, Kappa Tau Alpha, and Kappa Alpha Mu; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, He had published articles in many national and | ||||||
13 | international scholarly publications and several U.S. and | ||||||
14 | international newspapers; in 1996, Bradley journalism alumni | ||||||
15 | established two endowed funds in his name, the Dr. Paul B. | ||||||
16 | Snider Award for Teaching Excellence in Communication and the | ||||||
17 | Dr. Paul B. Snider Journalism Scholarship; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, As a journalist, starting in 1936, he worked in | ||||||
19 | the newsphoto division of UPI (United Press International) in | ||||||
20 | Cleveland, and after World War II was manager of the Detroit | ||||||
21 | Bureau, resigning in 1951 to complete his education; after | ||||||
22 | coming to Peoria, for several years he worked summers at the | ||||||
23 | Peoria Journal Star and WEEK-TV, Channel 25; in 1973, he was | ||||||
24 | host and producer of "Urban Issues" on WTVP, Channel 47; from |

1 | 1976-79, he was the "Media Man," critiquing the media on | ||||||
2 | WEEK-TV, Channel 25; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, He had served as president of the Illinois Valley | ||||||
4 | Press Club, the Board of Directors of the Illinois Heart | ||||||
5 | Association, and was a member of the American Heart Association | ||||||
6 | National Public Relations Committee and Faith, Hope, and Love | ||||||
7 | (prison ministry); he also had been a member of the Peoria | ||||||
8 | Human Relations Committee and foreman of a Peoria County grand | ||||||
9 | jury; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, For several years, he was a tutor in the Common | ||||||
11 | Place adult literacy program; he was a member of the former | ||||||
12 | Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church and a Presbyterian lay | ||||||
13 | minister; he was active from 1978 to 1999 in Cursillo in | ||||||
14 | Christianity, including its prison ministry program; from | ||||||
15 | 2003, as a member of First United Methodist Church of Peoria, | ||||||
16 | he had been active in Caring Hearts, Loaves and Fishes, and | ||||||
17 | Neutral Ground (HIV/AIDS) programs; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, With his wife and children, he had traveled widely | ||||||
19 | abroad; and

20 | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Paul Snider is survived by his wife; his sons, |

| |||||||
1 | David Snider and Myk Snider; his daughter, Kathie Downs; and | ||||||
2 | his granddaughters, Julia and Lindsey; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
5 | his family and friends, the passing of Paul Snider; and be it | ||||||
6 | further

7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the family of Paul Snider as a symbol of our | ||||||
9 | sincere sympathy.
